I decided to use 10mm platforms for self-defense. With that decision, I bought lots of Gold Dot and XTP ammo from Underwood Ammo and Double Tap ammo.

The watered down stuff is equivalent to .40 S&W--not bad, just not 10mm. Watered down FMJ is good for practice--and for getting you brass so you can reload for practice ammo, and save your money for the good ammo on-line!

You ever consider buying 40SW barrels for those guns? Then you have a lot more options for off the shelf ammo.

I'd love to have a 20SF with a 40SW barrel. Course my plan would be to ream the throat to accept 1.269" OAL 180-200 gr handloads.

Back in the late 80s I made the 45acp-to-10mm switch, and haven't regretted it since.

If for some reason I couldn't carry a 10mm, well, I'd default back to the .45acp without thinking twice. But 'til that day arrives, the 10mm has served me well.

The cartridge's versatilty of use, penetrative ability against intermediate barriers, huge power curve, and wide selection of bullet-weights/styles in loaded ammo make it the hands-down choice among the so-called "service cartridges." That is, and has been, my take - I realize others remain unconvinced ...

Over the last 5-8 years, as ammo prices jumped, so did my reloading activity in 10mm and other cartridges. I currently reload 10mm practice ammo, most of it to the same power-level and with the same bullet-weight as my carry load, which is not the water-down, .40-duplicating crapola.

I agree that buying 10mm ammo from any of the "Big Three" is wasting money. You're paying a premium for a more expensive case but receiving only downloaded performance - literally .40-level ammo masquerading as a "10mm." If you want the full-throttle 10mm stuff, there's Underwood, Buffalo Bore and DT, anyone of which easily beats any of the Big Three. The 10mm ammo from Georgia Arms and CorBon does also.

The pure "collector" type aside, people considering something chambered in 10mm should really ask themselves: "Why do I want a pistol or revolver in this cartridge?" or "What is the intended use for it?"

Remember, if all you want a 10mm for is to shoot .40-level ammo, save your cash and just get a .40. At least your wallet will thank you for the honesty.

'Course, as mentioned, if you have either of the 10mm Glocks, you can buy several aftermarket barrels in various calibers, including .40S&W. Then you can go out and shoot real .40S&W ammo all day long.

My G-20 is one of my favorites, but is very role specific. I use it only as my woods, hiking, camping pistol. And only when in areas where black bear are a concern, which is almost anyplace where I'd be in the woods.

For almost any other use I carry either my G-19, or G-26. I have a G-21, but it is primarily just a range toy, or possible home defense pistol. I'd just as soon carry the 10mm as the 45 since they are the same size and I can buy 45 and 10mm ammo for the same price.

I like the smaller size of the 9mm's for everyday use and I've never seen anything to convince me that 45 is any better than 9mm for use against human threats. The 10mm is a step up in performance.

I've always preferred .45 ACP for the concrete jungle. Now, I do switch to the Glock 29 when I vacation, due to my vacation home being in the Huron National Forest.

I sold my .45 and haven't looked back. I really don't see a need to own one. The bullet selection isn't there and although having to shop a little for real 10mm ammo (we all know the players and HPR was left out LOL), just buy in bulk and be happy. You know I don't reload and I'm fine with my selections for range ammo or any task at hand. Lost capacity and not being able to get the levels out of your .45 are two very good reasons to not as well.

I still need to test Dallas reloads to see what they give. I think much of the bad thing about 10mm is maybe most don't know where it should fall. I beat on Fiocchi everyday to put out a real 10mm bulk cartridge

I’m a big guy at 275 lbs. and my primary carry rotation consists of G23 (40 cal), G19 (9mm), G20 (10mm), G30SF (45ACP), Ruger KP-90 (45ACP), BHP (9mm), or Smith 1006 (10mm). Backup gun is either a G26 (9mm) or G27 (40 cal).

I’ve been a hand loader and bullet caster since 1970 and load for them all. I shoot several times/week (retired you see) and I believe the notion you have to carry only one caliber to be proficient is a myth … practice, practice, practice and practice some more. Shot placement is king, shooting is fun and cheap and if you can shoot them all well don’t arbitrarily limit yourself.

Got to go … time for the second quarter magazines swaps.

I just did the opposite, my old primary was a XD-45 and now I carry a Glock 29sf.

No sir.

I am already too fat and underpowered as it is...I dont need my defensive handgun to take up my bad habits.

The 10mm stays.

I like .45 better. The way it feels in recoil, and the way I recover from it is better than 10mm and .40.

No harm in getting a .45 for CCW. You may like it better as well.

Yes placement is key. Two shots from LCP to center of mass at very close range using FMJs. There isn't really need to practice.

I did in '03. I'd been CCW'ing my S&W 1006 almost daily since 1991, but after some thoughtful consideration of several factors (Smith no longer MADE the 1006, future part scarcity, dwindling 10mm ammo offerings), I decided to standardize on the 1911 in .45 as my sidearm of choice.

I can honestly say, that in 12 years of ownership and THOUSANDS of rounds downrange, the only thing my Smith ever needed replaced, was an empty magazine. The .40 Short & Weak supplanted the need for the "FBI Lite" load, and therefore the bigger, bulkier frame. Not that I ever shot that FBI crap in it, other than at the range, maybe.

I do miss my old 1006, but I don't miss 10mm ammo prices, or the cost of 10mm mags!
