An act of desperation?

i like to have rounds on hand so i dont have to stop by a store and hope they have what i need.

I've been stocking up on components so there is never an issue.

I like to have enough for a range trip or two on hand. Don't feel the need to stockpile or hoard it for doomsday.

As a firm believer in hoarding I, always have some put up, unfortionatly my wallet is never capable of meeting my desire. My wife stopped to look for .22's, last week, and they were sold out of everything. My guess is people are stocking up with the hope of a repete of 08, and $100.00, a box price's.

Funny about my Wal-Marts

compared to OP's. Here in Eastern and Central Iowa they seem loaded with everything....all the common centerfire stuff 9mm, 38 spec, etc and lots of 22LR with bulk packs of Federal, Winchester, Remington, etc. Plus bunches of other rifle and handgun fodder.

It seems funny to me and wish I could figure this out...I have a lot of ammo and decided I did not need 4000 rds of 9mm...so I went on another forum and advertised an original case of 9mm Win. (No this is not a trick to sneak in a sale here) for $225 and did not get a call. Of course, I would not have shipped it but still...(Have to go and watch NCIS) with my wife.

my buddies are having a hard time finding ammo from their usual online sources, so if you stumble across a box of something you know you'll use and the price is right go for it...if you were going to spend the money on ammo eventually anyway there's not much of a difference in the grand scheme...

if the price is jacked up because of some paranoid delusion of armageddon, though, i'd pass...

Ammo distributors warned people in March 2011 that ammo prices would go up about 25% by May 2011. Nothing even similar happened.

Lots of rumors of price increases are begun by distributors, gun shop staff and guys renting tables at gun shows.

Why do people still fail to understand the incentive for these rumors? Many of them pose as regular laymen on gun websites, trying to create a buying frenzy. Their dire warnings worked very well after the election in 2008.

So what's desperate about buying a box of ammo at walmart?

Such is life.

It is tax return season and lots of people have some money to spend. RELAX, this is just a temporary issue...at least until election day........

My local wal-marts are stuffed to the gills with ammo. Everything I could ever want, just don't really want to pay for. I typically buy online, unless I buy something new I just have to try out then it is off to wally world for a new calibler.

There are three Wal-Marts in my city, and they usually have plenty of stuff, though most of it is FMJ. I don't "stockpile" so to speak, keeping 50-100 rounds of centerfire pistol ammunition for each of five calibers (none of which begins with the number 4.) I do, however, like to keep a lot of .22LR around, but my favorite rimfire guns won't eat the bulk stuff by either Winchester or Remington reliably. I have to keep a few hundred rounds of Mini-Mags, at twice the price, around to keep them happy. I do not own any centerfire rifles (yet.)

With Walmart being 30 minutes away, i have had to put a little foresight into my ammo buying. I'm happy with around 50 rounds of each caliber (except .22LR, a couple hundred rounds on hand), just in case i get the urge to walk out in the pasture and put a few into the hill.

I starting stocking up on ammo years ago, long before there were shortages, higher prices, and hoarding going on. If I came across a really good deal on ammo in a caliber that I used a lot, I would pick it up; or if I bought a gun in a new caliber, I would order it online if unavailable locally. As it stands right now I haven't gone shopping for ammo in quite some time and don't anticipate I will have to anytime soon.

There will be another shortage and higher prices than last time (when obama was elected).

Not only "old timers" stocking up on ammo but there are thousands of new gun owners.
Just in the last couple months I have taught a number of new shooters. These are people that never had any interest at all in owning guns.
The last man and wife's house was broken into and like most everyone else they think things are going to get a lot worse.


So, better stretch the budget and get all the ammo you can.

I work in the oil field, and average about 2 cities a week in my travels. The wal-marts in Odessa, Midland, Abilene, Pecos, Kennedy, and my home town of San Angelo, Tx, all have very good stock in the last month on ammo.

The Walmart in Carlsbad, Nm, conversely, has almost nothing.

Plenty of ammo at my local Walmart.

Even had a stack of bulk boxes of WWB .45ACP. Haven't seen that happen since '07.

If buying one box of ammo qualifies as an "ACT OF DESPERATION" I can only imagine what picking up a 12 pack of toilet paper would be.

Local GS had 1000 round boxes of 165 grain PMC. With one of my 10% gun purchase coupons i got it for $260.

There is absolutely no rhyme or reason to how Wal-mart restocks ammo. One week my local store will be loaded with 9mm, but no .40 S&W... go to the next store 10 miles further on the way to the range and that Wal-mart has tons of .40 S&W, but no 9mm.

I try to pick up a box of "something" everytime I make a trip to town. I use a wide variety of calibers and I figure it wouldn't hurt anything to grab a box and slowly start stocking up. Last time I went to town I bought a box of 9mm (which I never use and don't think I even have any of currently) and a box of 12 ga buckshot. Next time it will probably be a .22 bulk pack. If a guy buys more than he shoots he will eventually have a nice little stock of ammo.

I have never understood this.

I never wait to go to the grocery store until I'm completely out of food, I don't wait for my fuel gauge to register empty before I fill up and I never shoot all the ammo I have.
