Thanks, IBD. Looks like on Friday (payday) I'll be ordering that or something similar. Anyone have any experience actually installing one of these things? I think it's something I can handle myself. I'm handy. Not a gunsmith or a tool genius, but handy.

WD...........when project dun....adj pad installed on M39 we need to see pics...& report of how it works....the good, the bad, the ugly of it.....:)

30-30 or 35 Rem?

I already have a 30-30 and 45-70 and haven't needed a firearm in 20+ years. I'd like Wild West Guns to make me a take down 336 lever action (pre safety) It will be mostly for deer hog and bear hunting. I know a 30-30 is more than adequate for the job. Any advantages to the 35 Rem? I'm way past caliber consolidation at this point and I'm not worried about availability of ammo. Thanks for your input.

"Any advantages to the 35 Rem?"

Well it is bigger then .308 even if it don't expand any....:).....some say it is a better round than the 30-30 at same game animal, same range/distance.....a check of a ballistics chart will tell you the energy gain if any.....

I've had a 336 in .35 rem for 20+ years and love it. Ballistically, it is virtually identical to the 30-30, except for the larger diameter. Bullet diameter and factory bullet weight (200gr) availiblity were my reasons for choosing it over a 30-30. Plus,no one I kenw {personally} had one.

Buffalo Bore has some 210grs I want to try. Should wack groundhogs pretty hard.

Thanks for input on 35 Rem. I did some digging as well since post. It will be my next lever action caliber.

Took mine out for the first time since buying last year and was very disappointed. Tried to hit 2'x2' target @ 75 yards and rounds were impacting about three feet over and to the right. Two friends tried and had same results. Rear sights all the way to the bottom of the adjustable ramp, no way the bring point of aim lower. I've never seen factory settings so far off. Wasn't planning on scoping it. Not much choice now. (I might try a reciever mounted rear sight.) I've read lots of posts regarding late production Marlins and poor quality. I'm a believer.

You have three choices. You can scope it. You can put a taller front sight on. Or you can send her back to be fixed...and they may or may not put a taller front sight on. Now you have two more options than you thought. Good luck.

My Dad gave me his 30-30 in the late 1970's I think it is a 336C. I hunted deer with it for 30 years, gave it to my son year before last. He started using the Hornady ammo and has killed two deer in excess of 200 yards and they fell in their tracks. I sure miss that gun.

well i figured id throw this up here, finished out one of my projects. a 69 texan that was gun koted, with rosewood laminate that i put on. A skinner front sight, a williams fp peep sight, standard scope mount i modified to get the peep to fit, and a vortex viper HS 1x4x24.

Frontsight

I'm trying to find a post by someone who mentioned taking their 336 to the Frontsight shooting school. If anyone can direct me to that post it'd save me a lot of time by not weeding through 100+ pages. Thank you.

yoAdriannne, go to the top of this page, and enter "Frontsight" into the Search bar that pops up when you click "Search this thread", hit return. There are two posts on that topic, both by Sheepdog.

I've taken my 336 in 30-30 twice to Frontsight and discussed it in this thread. What do you want to know? I was very happy with it there. I Will take it there in the future and even plan to take it to an Awerbuck class. I spend a lot of time with this rifle so I want to know how to use it. Having said that, I've also taken a mini-14'to an Awerbck class as well as to Frontsight. The mini-14 did fine In both of these classes but the 30-30mwas more fun in my opinion.

Hey y'all, I just bought a new 336A (my first leaver action). I took it to the range and tried to sight in at 50yd but i was shooting about 8" high at lowest rear sight setting. I dont shoot open sights a whole lot but i'm not bad. i have the factory sights on and am shooting 150 grain bullets. is this a common prob?
it should be fairly flat out to 100yds right?

what do you recommend to have done to stock 336? mods/accessories
i want it to be sleek but accurate...its a hunting/SHTF gun

Hi Fredy,

welcome to THR and the club.

there is, imho, something wrong because mine shoots to point of aim at 50 metres and at 25 metres in it's respective settings (distances we shoot our lever action matches at the range) , with standard winchester 150 grs ammo and with cheapo prvi 150 grain softpoint ammo.

No doubt better qualified club members will chime in with some good advice.

8 inches at 50 metres is a lot

I thought i was a total spaz when i saw my group was soo high and the sight was bottomed out. i called it a day so i could do some research. i am looking at a skinner alaska peep sight and rail, but i am a little pvd that it was soo poor out of the box.

Fredy, when you are looking at Skinners site, order a new front sight. Go to the range with the new front sight installed and a file. File the front sight to fit, or just email them with your results. They will be more than happy to help you.

I'm liking the idea of a new 3030 with a rear peep sight... but what do you do about the buckhorn over the barrel? take it off somehow, or just leave it, useless but still there, like an appendix?

Here's a crappy pic of my Marlin 336W while it isn't super unique by any means it's payed for itself several times over by filling my freezer on countless occassions therefor it has a earned a special place with me (and it's not a Remlin :) ).
