Remington 700 SPS trigger question....

I have a Remington 700 SPS Tac. AAC-SD. It is the only "newer" 700 I own. It has the X-Mark Pro trigger. The trigger is 3lb.10oz., the adjustment will make the trigger stronger but will not lighten it past this weight. It's not a big deal to respring the trigger, but is this he way they all act? I had talked to a buddy that has the 700LTR and it is the same. Just curious if anyone has had any luck with the external adjustment. I am wanting a 2.5lb trigger pull.
 
Seriously, give-up-the-ghost, and buy an after-market, such as Timney.
 
i never even tried to adjust my x-mark pro. the pull left a lot to be desired and i had read too many complaints by people who had tried to adjust it with poor results. i switched it out for a timney 510 which i like much better. the bow is wider and serrated which i prefer, and the adjustment is really easy to do.

I will end up replacing it soon enough. Thanks guys, was hoping that Remington might have had it right this time. I love the break on the x-mark, it has a great feel. Just a little too heavy for me. If It still had the same feel when it breaks, at 2.5lbs. I would not even consider replacing it. Oh well, I had been looking at the Timney... Looks like that is the only way to go. Thanks guys....
 
try adjusting it and see how it goes. mine felt heavy as all get out from the factory. it broker clean but felt heavier than the factory trigger on my 870p (~7lb). i've read a lot of complaints about the pull being really inconsistent after trying to adjust it, something that i didn't want to deal with. but there is the occasional good word about adjust it down and it being just fine.

A gunsmith friend of mine just put a Timney into my 700 SPS Tactical. Tons better than the factory trigger, which could be lightened to a bit over 3lbs only. Had the Timney set to 2 pounds. Breaks like glass. Cost: $135 installed.
 
I have and sps like yours and adjusted mine down to 2.5 lbs and it is not bad at all. BTW I have timneys and custom triggers on several 700's.
 
There are two springs acting on the xmark trigger. I have removed one and just use the spring in the blade itself. I believe there are two to keep the pull from being set too low.
 
I am very happy with the Shilen trigger in my LTR. I have used a Timney in other rifles and all performed very well.

Sometimes, a Remington factory trigger has to be cleaned really well amd all adjustment screws need to be cleaned really well. Then, sometimes, you have to install after market springs.
 
Once you get used to it you would never notice the difference between 2.5 and 3 lbs. As long as the trigger has a clean crisp break 3 or even 3.5 lbs is light enough. Spend the money on ammo and learn how to shoot the gun and trigger you have.

If you were talking about a 4-5 lb mushy trigger it would be different
 
This is mainly a back-up rifle, for when my nephew comes up to go shooting. I have an older 700 30-06, that he uses normally. This 308 will probably become my target rifle since he has taken a shine to the 06. Thanks guys for the advice. I might respring it, but I am almost afraid too. The trigger is crisp, one of the best breaking triggers I have shot in the last 20 years. I dont want to mess that up. I am going to get a few hundred rounds through it and see. That trigger does break nice, but that's all I can say for it. Mine wouldn't adjust down by 1 lb, and broke at 6#.

It was out of that gun so fast it wasn't funny, replaced with a Timney. Can you blame Remington after the job that was done to them over their last trigger?
 
Remington Trigger

Try backing off on the setscrew on the front of the trigger housing, that will lighten the pull and not change the sear engagement. Al
 
I tried Old Dog Man, it will not decrease the tension. After numerous checks with my pull gauge, you can only increase the factory pull. Once you turn the set screw back down it goes back to 3lb 10oz and stops... I guess the factory had it as low as it will go without springing it. I am going to my local shop to see if he has a Timney. Thanks guys for the help, guess its beating a dead horse. Thanks again
 
Rem. trigger adjust

Somrtimes the spring will be hung-up on the threads, take the screw out and use a little bent wire and pull it out f the hole and check that. I have never seen one that can't be set down to about 1.5 to 2# and don't fall off the sear when bolt is slammed hard. The sear engagment screw will have to be heated to break the sealent so it can be adjusted. Al
 
I have an older Rem. 788 in .223, horrible stock trigger, I bought a Timney trigger, took my pocket knife and trimmed a smidgen off the stock where the safety slides to fit, breaks like glass @ 34 oz.'s, what more could you want? Got mine off of Midway, Larry had plenty of them.
