I have recently been shooting my K31. I have always wondered which size brush or bore rope everyone else uses for cleaning. The 30 cal 7.62 are actually a little tight and the 7 are too small.

What does everyone else use for their Swiss Military Surplus rifles?

The 7.5x55 Swiss GP1911 cartridge used in your K31 rifle is a true '.30 caliber', bullet diameter of .308" with a bore to match. Use the 7.62 brass or nylon brushes, you shouldn't need to clean very much since the bores are very smooth if not worn.

I use a 7mm jag with a fairly large patch, it seems to fit just right. The brush I use is 8mm. I too found .30 cal jags to be a little tight. My understanding is the the GP11 bullet is acutally .307" though I have never pulled and measured one.

I use 30 caliber. I also use 30 caliber chamber brushes. On a straight pull action, keep that chamber clean.

You clean it same way you clean a normal US made 308 caliber...:)

With luuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuv!

Kestak has it right. I used to use a boresnake as the only method of cleaning, but have since returned to using rod-and-jag method because I get to spend more time caring for the rifles (look at me, starting to sound like they're my kids).

My bore measures .307, so there is a small difference between the standard 30 cal and the Swiss, but not enough to go through the trouble of finding a new rod. I use all 30cal accessories, and haven't found any problems. In fact, I load with .308 dia bullets too! Also, I believe the bores are chromed (correct me if I am wrong) so as Edarnold said it is usually pretty easy to clean.

Another solution to try if your 30 cal jag is a bit tight is to use thinner/smaller patches as well.

I don't believe they are chromed, they just use very shiny steel. I have purchased some for parts that the inside of the barrel was badly rusted and there was no signs of chrome when I tried to remove the rust.

Until recently the Swiss government weapons assembly factory(W-FBern) assembled all the 7.5 military rifles(Model 1889 thru the Model1957) from numerous parts contractors. The only exception that I know of was the 1893 model by mannlicher(?spelling?)(hard to find and usually big bucks). The 11 types and later 7.5 types all used GP-11,with a cupro/nickel plating over a mild steel jacket. Actually there are a few exception to the shiny bullets the Swiss used but they are hard to find and rarely seen. All the earlier models used GP-90. They never chromed bores or used corrosive primers. W-FBern states that the correct diameterbulletis.3087". The Swiss solider almost never put a brush down their tubes but they did use basicly a bore snake and grease(Waffenfett and later Automatenfett). The Swiss cleaning technique involved a lot less work-no brushing- but grease, ungrease, shoot, grease, drink beer. I find it odd that one would find a 30 cal jag tight but an 8mm brush is OK. The tightness anyone feels would be that the bore is not .300" but more or less is .295-.297". The groove dia is .308. The 57 modeldoes use a rod instead of the pull rope but it also was basically greased. I use wipeout occasionally when I want a really clean barrel.Best

This.

K31 bore per specification a new muzzle would measure 7.51mm and shot out at 7.64mm. 7.51 is .295 and 7.64 is .300.
