OK, so MO uses the NICS for all gun transfer background checks according the ATF website.

Assuming you have no background check gremlins to be concerned about, I'm left with wondering about:

Any chance the FFL smelled a straw purchase?

have my CCW and I have recently purchased three pistols. Those sales went thru without problem. Today, my husband bought me a .22 target pistol and after I filled out the paperwork, it was called in. We were then informed that the transaction was on hold for a week. Why would that be? I've passed my CCW background check?

Talk to your FFL and ask if it's them that put a hold on the transaction or if it's a NICS hold. If it's a NICS hold, then it shouldn't be for a week. NICS holds are for no more than 3 business days, not including the day it is submitted, Saturdays, Sundays, and Holidays.

As far as who the gun was for, it was supposed to be my mother's day gift so I went because it had to go in my name since it was for me.

From a federal law standpoint I don't believe that's quite accurate. To illustrate, I bought a Ruger .22 for my wife for her birthday, I paid for it, I filled out the 4473. Then, on her birthday, I gave it to her.

Rewinding, if I had told the FFL the same exact story but I paid for the gun and she filled out the 4473, buzzer, wrong answer, straw purchase alert. I'm not saying it was a straw purchase but the FFL doesn't have the benefit of knowing about every family situation that comes up.

In any event, the only other thing I can imagine is the NICS came up with a date that included all the days which don't count in the 3 day delay. Say it was a Friday with Monday being a holiday, the 3 day clock starts ticking the following Tuesday which means they have until Thursday to review, you can get the gun the following Friday.

New felons are minted daily in this country, perhaps someone with very similar identifying characteristics joined the ranks of the prohibited persons recently. Put another way, it may not be about you, just someone else who a computer thinks is close enough to you that further review is required to resolve the similarity.

I wouldn't worry about it, the machine is already in motion. If it happens again then submit a Voluntary Appeal File so the NICS doesn't have to dig up the same graveyard again and again.

theres no rhyme or reason to delays. When one is denied, theres a process to find out why it happened. One never knows why they are delayed. For example, I bought an ar-15....passed the check. bought an ak varient.....passed the check. Attempted tto buy a bolt action hunting rifle, and I got delayed and was called 3 days later and told they had gotten a "Procced" from NCIS

My understanding is that the NICS hold is for 5 days. I guess I will have to go back and check. The shop might have said a week just to make sure they are in compliance (fudging a little extra time).

Delays from NICS can be for all sorts of reasons and its not at all unusual to have folks pass with a proceed one day and get a delay the next time.

Nope, it's three. But the clock doesn't start until the day -after- you file the form, and doesn't stop until midnight of the 3rd day.

That's the way the government counts so they can turn 3 days into 5 .... rather like they way they do their accounting.
