I was wondering if anyone knows of a public rifle range that has distances out past 400 yards? I was hoping there might be a range reasonably close to the Houston area or Dallas.

Thanks,

I THINK there is one over by Mineral Wells. A friend said he went over there to shoot his 50 cal rifle....Don't know the name though.....chris3

I am a regular out at Tacpro, and have shot at Best of the West several times. Both places offer 1k shooting, and are worth the drive.

I wonder if Bayou Rifle Gun Club near Pearland has that distance. 500 yds is really far.

Topgun? Shooting club? I think it's called.

Google long range rifle ranges in dfw.

Iirc its NE of Dallas.

Offering 600ish yrd ranges. Pretty sure it's private though.

Whatcha shootin by the way?

My grandfather has a new (to him) .308 that he wants me to take out past the 300 yards that we can shoot on his land....and I also would like to push my .270 WSM a little further.

I have shot out to 450, and I love the feeling when I get consistent hits out to further distances. Sure, shooting sub-MOA groups at 100 yards is fun, but I enjoy putting groups on an 8.5"x11" piece of paper at 450 yards so much more! It is an addiction that I can't get my fix for because I have nowhere to shoot.....

When I finish with school and get a sufficient amount of disposable income, a dedicated long range rifle, reloading equipment, and a membership to a good range will be mine.....I just hate waiting... :banghead:

Wow. Finding a decent outdoor range anywhere near Dallas is a challenge.

There is topgun (http://topgunshootingclub.com) but they are private and have limited days. They do allow the public to come and shoot it seems. They also have some odd rules about what you can shoot at.... See rule 18 on the right side of the page...

hey greyling is the range your talking about the one on hwy 31?

I always hear em blasting when im on the neches but have never checked it out

yes it is. it's an ok range. The owners need to spend a little more time and money keeping the backstop boards up. It was better before times got tight and people started picking up their brass. But for the most part everybody's nice.

Best of the West seems nice enough. I've only shot their action bays during 3-gun matches (where we shoot out to 400y), so I don't have any personal experience on the normal firing lines.

I'm a member at another outdoor private club on the other side of town (only goes out to 200y), which is fine for me. My spotting scope isn't up the the task of spotting 223 holes beyond 300y anyway.

TacPro is private.

TacPro is not private; but last I knew you are limited to 500yd if you have not been certified on the 1000yd range (and those certifications are only held at certain times). They have done a lot of work on that range though, so I don't know if that is still the case.

There is also Tiger Valley in Waco (the L. T. Dillon Range) which has a nice 1,000yd NRA High Power range complete with pits; but that is a private range that is opened to the public only occasionally.

Wow. Finding a decent outdoor range anywhere near Dallas is a challenge.

Well, if you figure that you have to drive about an hour in any direction from Dallas just to escape the city/suburbs, then you only have to drive until land gets cheap enough you can afford to own enough of it to make a 600yd rifle range economical.

Not to mention that the closer you are to Dallas, the more shooters you'll attract who will require adult supervision in order to be safe - especially when shooting rifles at ranges beyond 200yds. Look at the Garland Range... I won't even go that range because of all the stupid rules and they still have problems with the neighbors who are something like 1 mile downrange and 800' higher in elevation - and they don't even have anything over 100yd.
