I am thinking of buying a Colt 1991 45ACP. I am going to have it built into a custom carry gun. All practical, no BS. Does anyone know of a reason not to use this as a platform? I know that Springfields cost less and that I could get a loaded model for the same price as this gun befor the work is done, but I want a Colt. I have worked hard and saved up, and I can have a gun that only has what I want, nothing more, nothing less. My way, like a burger. Does anyone know of a reason to use or not use this as a base gun?

I bought my first 1911 last year. I was in the same mindset, and only a Colt would do. Buy the Colt, I think you will regret it if you don't.
 
Not a thing wrong with using a 1991A1 as a build platform.

my commander i just posted pics of started life as a 1991. my full size at teh custom shop now is a new roll mark 1991. buy it.
 
Nothing wrong with Springfeild, but from what I have read the small parts are made of better quality on a Colt. I have an Colt Officers 1991, and have been customizing it my self. It shoots awesome and I love it!
Go for it, Colts are great. Also you can find great deals on used 1991's as well!

Nothing wrong with getting a Colt and having it customized to your specifications.

If you've always wanted a Colt, then by all means get a Colt.
 
The only disadvantage to the 1991 is if you don't like firing pin safeties, the 1991's are Series 80 pistols.

Actually, many folks recommend the 1991 or it's stainless sister, the 1091 for a base gun to customize. Truth is, if you like a good, reliable, reasonably accurate, basic 1911, there isn't much out there that beats them. Good luck with your project.
 
A friend of mine has had 2 Colts done his way by Wilson. They are nice. Myself I can't afford to have my Colts all tricked out. Factory does fine for me.

True, but the OP said he's looking for a "All practical, no BS" carry gun, so the roll-mark is probably less of an issue than it would be if he were looking for a BBQ gun.

Function before fashion. ;)
