Did you just screw off the Century brake and screw on the CZ brake? Where did you get the brake?

If you live in a free state (which I don't...) that's all you need to do. The VZ2008's barrel is long enough to not require a permanently welded muzzle extension. CNC Warrior and Czechpoint both sell the brakes in the M14x1 RH thread pattern. I just had mine installed at the shop before it was neutered for CT ban compliance. :banghead:

I think the ones Czechpoint sells are the same as the ones from CNC Warrior, just ten dollars more expensive... but don't quote me on that. I ordered mine from Czechpoint solely because I wanted one of those awesome hats they're selling right now lol. :D

Just joined a few weeks ago!

Talk about a underrated rifle!

FAB plastic rail (wanted to see if I even like a rail before I got a nicer one)
FAB Pistol grip
Midway single point sling
Bushnell micro reddot
Just added a Magpul RVG forgrip

Mine is just the Century version, but I have to say ive been very impressed. Build quality is amazing (for Century) and accuracy is great. I always hated AK ergonomics so it took me a while to finally make the plunge into the VZ world, but im glad I finally did. Controls are very ergonomic (for a non-AR rifle) and they really shoot well. Mags were a little expensive but I ended up finding a bunch for $17 a piece so its still reasonable. My next step will be buying a better stock (looking at the FAB version with the steel joint) and a nicer rail. But I love these rifles, very overlooked in the world of AK v AR. I say this is far superior to the AK on darn near every front but cost of mags.

Well, the forementionned shop sells to US and those components are not regulated by any law... ;)

The spring cover rails are much better than side mounts and forearm rails in all aspect but one - with siderail, you can use iron sights in case the red-dot fails.

That's good to hear, Bohemus. I need to whip out the Babblefish and see if I can understand the website, I don't think Czech is close enough to Spanish for me to take a go at it .

Price (before shipping/fees) looks to be 177.50$US at today's exchange rate; actually quite reasonable considering the money some folks spend on railed handguards that don't look like they'd handle as well.

Although, looking at it, the handguard rails put the scope too far forward, but the spring-cover rail is almost too far back; I wonder if you could do both and join them with a railed bridge to accomodate the Goldilock's out there who want it "just right" ? Would the VZ eject straight up into it?

Good to know. I'm not 100% certain that the added weight of the part + optics is worth it, but I'm going to have to give that a little thought. It's certainly a worthwhile consideration for anyone that prefers magnified optics.

That's another consideration. I'm going to investigate a few optics with short OAL and see what I can come up with. I will say that the handguard/cover combination would probably tear up the scope either from ejected brass casings (if not a well constructed optic) or by harmonic forces (which may very well destroy the best optics).

:)

It looks like Czechpoint has the rifles in stock once again, so I am looking at what to buy. Since I live in a free state, the rifle will be a hicap/doublestack, but I'm unsure on the furniture. I actually think the "wood" looks the best, and I have no "tactical" need for a folding stock. Is one style superior or worth getting over the others? Or are they all kinda crummy, and will need replacing anyway? Is the cheap sporter stock worth a dang?

barnbwt, personally I'm fond of the folder with composite wood furniture. The folder locks up better than just about any other I've tried (just as good as an AICS Stage-2). It does, however, have the typical cheek-weld issue (if you use optics), but that's easy to solve. As far as the rest of the furniture, the composite wood is extremely tough and durable, and while I know I'm likely the minority in this regard, it appeals to me from a historically accurate, functional (albeit unnecessary, I find it handy for transport), and even aesthetic standpoint. From what I've seen there is nothing at all wrong with the wood furniture (definitely much nicer than what you'd find on a WASR, but inferior to something from any noteworthy stock maker). The sporter stock I didn't care for much, but I doubt that it's poorly constructed.

:)

I had a feeling the furniture was as well made as the rest of the rifle ;) I was more concerned about the reports of the grip/stocks being undersized (funny, no complaints about M1 carbines being tiny). But if the factory ergonomics aren't bad enough to require modification, I think I'll aim for the all-wood look, too. But I may go with a folder, since it's only 30$ more, and probably has more utility. I can always pick up/make a stock later. Can the rifle be fired with the stock folded? (yeah, I know it's stupid, but it's good to know that I could go all "First Blood" if I wanted )

I was also planning on getting a railed foregrip, but Bohemus's stuff is wrecking havoc with that plan... I'll probably have a cool muzzle brake of some sort put on, too, since I've heard it's not that big a deal.

I'm feeling kinda good that the SVT-40 at the LGS didn't tempt me off the Golden Path :D My daudling has already caused the price to go up +100$ in the last 3 months or so...

Armoredman,
How's the eye relief with that scope when your head is down on the stock? They aren't too far back when mounted over the spring cover like that, are they?

I have medium sized hands and the pistol grip is a close fit, but does just fine for me. If you have big hands it might be more of a problem for you.

Sure can. Like you said it's limited in practical use (perhaps use in very tight confines, e.g.: a vehicle) but it's nice to know it's possible.

:)

Eye relief is just fine, and it worked quite well today. :)

I tried that "shoot with the stock folded" once with my vz-58 7.62x39mm...I hit nothing. bad idea.

Yeah, but it's useful for impressing rednecks :D

I'm glad to hear the scope ergos are acceptable for ya'll. God knows the VZ was never designed with the DMR application in mind. Just as soon as the new FN49 shows up in the next week or so, I'll place my order. If I do it now, the anticipation of both will probably cause me to stroke out ;). I'll be happy so long as I get my order in before the next price increase.

Not that they're running out anytime soon, but how many of these dang things does Czechpoint have left? It sounded like they were selling them even faster than they could be put together.

Not a clue as to remaining numbers but I imagine that is indeed the case as they have garnered much more [well deserved] attention in the last few years.

:)

I happen to know CzechpointUSA is running at breakneck speed to assemble just the basic SA vz-58 7.62x39mm standard capacity rifles. The demand is very high right now. I don't know when the 5.56mm like this one will be out again, but I have heard tell it shouldn't be too long, if all goes well. I can say I enjoy shooting both rifles a LOT, and would be hard pressed now to say which one I like better.

count me in... just came back from my LGS and picked up a CAI VZ 2008... I'm impressed so far... I got to pick from multiple ones and got the better one... one cool thing about dealing with LGS but it cost $400+ tax... not bad for a pretty cool rifle... now time to clean her up and get her ready to be broken in on Wed... I'll post range report... Johnny

Thanks Maverick223... I'm planning on going to break her in on Wed... I'll be taking a tactical rifle class and we'll see how she does... I'm excited... :)

So, I am taking the plunge today! I'm about to complete my order with Czechpoint for a military folder; is there anything I should specifically ask for with my order? I don't think there's any wood furniture left, and no barrels over 16", but is there anything I'm missing? Also, is the folder worth getting over the fixed stock? (I'm likely to make a new fixed stock anyway, though)

Ooh! Magazines! Anything else I'm forgetting, like certain extra parts?

Thanks for the bad influence y'all!
TCB

IMO the folder is absolutely worth it. As far as extra magazines, check MidwayUSA for 4 in a leather pouch, they are used (and require replacement of a couple of parts to be legal per 922r requirements) but the ones I received were in excellent condition and the least costly I have found.

:)

I've gone for the folder :)

Even if I'm not using it to shrink the rifle, by all accounts its just as sturdy, well made, and ergonomic as the fixed stock (well, after wrapping in foam/paracord). The "stock slap" I've heard complaints about seems to be most prevalent on the CAI's (slant break pitches the stock up), and is equally bad on the folders/fixed (upward slant of comb). If it bothers me that much, I'll make a replacement wood stock with better ergos

I plan on changing out a few more internal parts so milsurp mags are still kosher. Seems like a metal trigger and stainless piston are two worthwhile upgrades that would keep me in compliance (you only need two extra, right?) I'll probably change out the muzzle break too, eventually, but just for kicks. Maybe get one of those cool dust-cover optics rails... I'll chime back in when I get a chance to test it out!

I haven't done so as of yet, but I plan to and those are parts that I plan to go with (mainly because I like the OEM furniture, which would be the simplest to swap). Two is all you need for the D.Technik (aka: CZ-USA, Czechpoint, et al) builds, however the trigger doesn't count as it is already a US manufactured part. Your other options are to only replace the follower of the magazines (which, despite being polymer, is fairly well constructed), or replace the entire fire control group (which is fairly costly and yields no discernible advantage other than compliance).
