I have come across a bunch of .45 ACP pistols that I like. Which ones would be the most reliable from jamming and most accurate?
Which ones good for personal protection and fun on the range?
They would all be the full size models with 5 inch barrels:
1. Sig Sauer P-220
2. Sig Sauer 1911
3. Springfield Bi-Tone Light? model
4. Armscor Rock Island GI model or whatever model is the lowest cost $400?
5. Para-Ordinance Warthog (however this one is a compact .45)

+1 for the P220.

I have carried one (the same one) on and off duty every day since 2000. It has never failed. I have never had a single malfunction with it. It is extremely accurate. I have put over 100,000 rounds through my P220 and I have only sent it back to Sig to have the normal maintenance done.

Another vote for the Sig.

Why? I like 1911's, but good ones ain't cheap and cheap ones ain't good.

The 220 is a more modern design that will likely be a better choice overall, probably more accurate, and certainly more reliable.

If you want a 1911, and want a good one, you'll have to spend a lot more money.

Of the choices offered and taking into consideration your concern with reliability and accuracy the SIG 220 would be the obvious choice.

For dead bolts reliability I'd go with the P220.

If you can stomach a polymer framed gun S&W M&P45s are great.

In a polymer framed pistol I would opt for the S&W M&P45 and in a steel framed pistol the Dan Wesson Pointman 1911.

STI Spartan; great gun, very accurate for a 'budget' gun.
I would stand by STI. I purchased a Rangemaster about a year ago and it has ran flawless and can really make a constant 8" group at 25 yds. A couple of weeks ago, I put 5 out of 8 on a 12"x18" steel at 100 yds off-hand, no joke.

I'm looking to get STI Trojan in 9mm hopefully by years end. I would highly recommend the upgrade from the Spartan to the Trojan from the ones that I have handle between basic fit/finish/function.

Have fun deciding

The 1911 design is cocked and locked or you must rack the slide. The P-220 can do both locked n cocked and double action (one in the chamber) but there is something about the 1911 design that feels good in the hand. Perhaps its not as thick as the Sig and is flat. On the Sig P-220 if you have it locked n cocked does it have that additional safety in the grip?

There are hundreds of similar guns out now, a TRP or Operator from springfield, A Cobra carry, from Baer, a Sig 1911 tactical, or a FN with the red dot is supposed to be one of the best now, also The new XD is on the same level,Wilson special ops, and Bill WIlson carry,The S&W" e" series, Bobtails, Valor, Fusion and on and on. It depends on what you choose to spend, and what the purpose is, Combat, Target, Concealment, Hi capacity, there are so many choices now, you need to have some parameters. The spread on the sig to the RI is huge, if you are looking for under a grand, I like springfields, or Smiths.
You can get a lot for your money from Smith right now.

The P220 can be SAO or DA/SA, but not all at once in the same gun. And no, the Sig 220 in it's SAO setup does not have a grip safety. Most modern guns don't use grip safeties anymore, but there is the occasional exception like the SA XD series.

For a little more explanation on how these different trigger systems operate, take a look at the sticky on the top of the forum: Trigger Mechanisms; A Guide to What's What.

Of your listed options, I will say Sig 1911. I have the Tactical Operations, great gun, shoots and handles very well. Everythign is fit together very nicely as well. Actually don't have a single bad thing to say about it.

Course I prefer 1911 to any other handgun
