Hey I got another NOObie 40 cal question..

It appears to be a good example of why I don't like "ported" barrels on my defensive firearms, regardless of caliber.

Vertical muzzle flash causing loss of sight picture ( especially in reduced light ) and powder burns if you need to fire from a "retention" position or in close quarters, inside a car, over the lap of a loved one, etc.

^ You forgot to mention more noise!

OP, you could always try a different powder. Rumor has it that some powders have flash suppressants. Off the top of my head, the only one I can name is Auto Comp, which happens to work pretty well in 40SW.

this is the duty pistol of one of the local posse members..

would Universal be fast enough to help this, or should I just start with HP38?

It took me a minute to realize what you were talking about. I thought the light above the slide was just the sun hitting the tree.

That's pretty normal for a port-a-glocky... and at an indoor shooting range, it's blinding as an all-night anti-freeze bender, yeah. I really doubt you'll find a fast-burning powder fast enough to mitigate that flash much, being as it's pretty much have to burn out in lessthan 3 inches from the case mouth. Unfortunately, it's just a failing of the design.

I made some loads with 5.0 gr of Unique under a 180 FP hardball.. no help.

I think I'm gonna tell her to trade it for a Springfield XD or 1911.. they have to purchase their own sidearm, and it has to be at least a .40 cal

In my loads, I've noticed that Universal powder has less flash than Win 231 (HP-38). However, that is out of at least a 4 inch barrel without porting. I don't know that much about muzzle flash, but I'm guessing a faster burning powder (Clays, Bullseye etc) might "burn off" before the powder reaches the port cuts ??? Just a guess. You'd have to try it and find out. I can see having a ported barrel on a "game gun" but not a defensive firearm.

You should see the port flash I get with my .357 mag. when running my 296 / H110 loads through her, it looks like an alcohol funny car day or night. If this is a duty pistol, I would just switch to a non ported firearm. My Son and his wife to be both shoot .40 XDM's with my HS6 or Longshot reloads. Although I haven't noticed any muzzle flash during the day, but I haven't seen what it looks like in the dark yet either?

I may be mistaken, but I don't think LEO's can qualify with or carry reloads. So I have to ask the same question as Bovice regarding posse. Duty pistol and posse, kind of don't go together. Are you referring those groups that patrol the US / Mexico border? Please elaborate, as you have my curiosity up now.

Yes, this is pretty much what a .40 S&W does with most any load. The M-N M-38 in 7.62x54R does the same thing out of a 20" barrel, only bigger and more impressive if you like that sort of thing.

I have to ask... what exactly is this "posse"?
Sheriff Dept Mounted Division

and no, they have to carry Dept. issue ammo on duty..

These are the deputies that patrol county parks, fairgrounds, etc.. the mall parking lot during the Christmas rush.. festivals..

I was trying to come up with a solution for the practice ammo aspect.. I know, I know, you should practice with your duty ammo.. but she also wants to get into reloading as this has brought out the redneck in the family and friends... they've bought enough guns in the last two weeks to make a banana Republic nervous.. or to repel the giant worm things from "Tremors"

why I quit using 296 in my .44

if you want to stick with the same gun you could just drop in a non-ported barrel like this one. glock O.E.M. barrels look like they run about $50 more.

I was going to say the same thing as JEB did only he got to it faster. A different barrel would be just the thing if she really likes the pistol and wants to keep it cause she's used to it and shoots well with it. JMHO

rfwobbly-- I love doing that with my 44 MAG just for the shock factor. I tell em that they are "secret CIA flame thrower" rounds. :D
