Just got back from the range trying out the FNAR so thought I would post some targets. It's set up with a cheapo bipod and a Weaver Classic Extreme 2.5-10 x 50 scope. We did some shooting at 50 yards to get it on the paper, and I had two new shooters with me today who really did pretty well considering they have only shot AR15's twice prior to this. These targets are at 100 yards, shooting from the bipod on the crappy ASC plywood tables. The wind was picking up pretty good, probably 12 gusting to 15 this morning. Here's the rifle:

I forgot to bring the 150 SST loads but I had the Federal factory 165 Nosler solid base, which absolutely will not shoot in my other .308, but here they actually were usable, although not all that accurate. The small squares are 1", 1.26" c-c, this is about the average of the 4 x 5 shot groups I shot with it.

For the final group I had 7 rounds left of the Federal 7.62x51 175gr. SMK loads so shot five at the target and two at the head. The 5 shots were .610" c-c. The head shots, well they are a bit apart, but with nothing to aim at but a big black blob it's as good as I can do. The head on the target is 3" wide. The first 3 x 5 shot groups were not as good, ranging from .8-1.1" by the way.

All in all I am very pleased with it, the trigger took a little while to get used to but by the time I shot the last group and the headshots I was liking it quite a bit. The trigger averaged 4 pounds 3 oz for 5 pulls, and the total rifle weight with bipod, scope and 5 rounds in the magazine is 11 pounds 4 oz.

my BAR longtrac shoots about the same, averages 1 moa with factory ammo, Mine really likes winchester ballistic silver tips, get get some sub MOA groups if I concentrate.

Nice shooting! :D I've been wanting an FNAR for a while, but the price...

Is it comfortable to shoot? How's recoil? Is the stock polymer good, tough stuff or cheapy-feeling?

And is that one of those Walmart "Winchester" bipods? :p

It's a very comfortable gun to shoot in my opinion. I'll be interested to see how yours like the 150 SSTs; my SX-AR likes them best, but I haven't had a chance to put any Gold Medal Match through it yet.

TurtlePhish, it's comfortable to shoot and the whole gun feels very solid. The price now is under $1k, not bad at all compared to the competition. Actually I don't think the bipod is even good enough to merit the "Winchester" brand on it, just a generic.:)

Next time I get it to the range I'll try the 150 gr. SST's, my Ruger absolutely loves them.

Very nice gun: good groups even with the 'wrong ammo'.

I hate to be a whiner, but that Walmart Winchester stuff is c**p (sub-standard). I was bitterly disappointed with the screwdrivers I bought.

Something like that is what I'm looking for (someday). I've thought about the M1A, FNAR, AR10, ... I just don't have the money yet and am still dreaming so I follow every single '308' thread on here until I can put enough money together to buy what I want.

Again: nice gun/shooting!

browningguy,

Glad to hear you like your FNAR. Nice shooting. FNH guarantees 1MOA and you certainly achieved that. Congrats! When things cool down, I'll start back on load development on mine. Can't wait!

Love my FNAR!

I'm getting about 1/2 MOA with handloads (180 gr sierra MK). About 1 MOA with factory.

Just a quick update. I got out this morning before the rain and tried some Federal 168 SMK, Hornady 155 gr. Steel Match, and the 150 gr. SST load. It seems I was not pulling the trigger very well this morning but here are the results.

It hates the SST, the best 5 shot group was 2.05" with most hovering around 2.2". It was so bad I was worried my scope was loose or something.

The Hornady steel match shot every 5 shot group around 1.5", and the one 10 shot group stayed right at 1.5" also.

The Federal 168 SMK load is not quite as accurate as the 175 gr. load, only one group was at .81", the remaining groups stayed in the 1.1-1.22" range.

TurtlePhish check CDNN they run sales on the FNAR kinda regular, its price is pretty fair all things considered, the magazine prices are what make me drop my jaw

My FNAR really seems to prefer heavier bullets. Not sure why, exactly, but the lighter bullets don't seem to group as well as the heavier bullets. Started using 180gr Sierra Matchkings in it, shoots like a champ.

Might be worth a try.

Havelock; yeah magazine prices suck. I just picked up two spares - just glad I could finally GET them. The first two years I owned the rifle, there were none to be found!

I use to own one, never really cared for how heavy it was. It shot okay but I shot tighter groups with my Rock River AR-10 that I also use for hunting.

Been doing side by side testing of a Winchester SX-AR (FNAR in Mossy Oak Brush pajamas) and Remington R-25. So far, it is just about a dead heat. Both are accurate, dependable and heavy. I lean toward the SX-AR, even with the expensive mags. The Remington is my first as I've always avoided the brand, with the R-25 being DPMS anyway. Both have been 100% reliable with all ammo tested including 147gr milsurp, 168gr BTHPNM handloads, and everything store-bought. Both are easy on the brass too.

People complain about weight however the weight and semi-auto action really tame recoil.

Took the SX-AR out today and was pretty happy to get a 3" group at 250 yards using 150 SSTs with some majorly gusting wind (happy with myself mostly, I don't usually shoot that far).

Nothing wrong with that! Have the SX-ARs come down in price? I bought my FNAR when they first came out and paid for it, but a friend of mine has his eye on the Winchester version.

As far as I know, they aren't being produced anymore. Your friend might find a used one or a dealer's old stock. There are two on gunbroker right now and it appears they have not come down in price.
