S&W M&P15 5.56/.223 Rifle

I just got the M&P 15 MOE last week. Only took it out once and put about 150 rounds through it. I like it just fine so far. Nice midrange (cost wise) AR.
 
I got the Sport (not a fan of the FA or dust cover, especially for the price markup). The M&P line are great guns. It's a confident buy.

They're not THAT new, established enough. I kept mine over the Colt 6920. Lighter gun, and I'm a fan of the melonite and R5 rifling by Thompson center.

He will be happy.:)
 
If it fits your selection criteria of features and cost, buy it.

AR threads always end up with the fanboys touting their favorite brand, but an AR is an AR in most every case.

I've not heard anything negative on the S&W Brand AR rifles other than some customer service issues that happened several years ago.

I have a S&W 5.45x39mm upper (on a DPMS Lower) and it's been flawless, so my experience has been positive.

I bought a M&P sport after reading everthing i could find. Payed 595 for it but todays price's seem to be closer to 625 to 640 street price. They will shot when scoped sub-MOA groups. I am not a ammo burner so only have a round 800 rounds fired. I have no issue with it at all. Better trigger than many. Barrels maybe its best point with R5 rifleing and melonite treatment. Just a solid rifle for the money. No dust cover or FA but the FA is not needed as it hs a scalloped area on the bolt to push it closed if needed and for a regular guy nether is the dust cover. Just my 2 cents.
 
The M/P line has been a big winner for Smith and the ARs are a really good build quality for the money. I'd advise he get one before they crank up the price.
 
I've had a few custom AR's over the years, they've never stuck around long because I always end up feeling like they were to expensive for what they did.
I've had my eye on the M&P15 Sport for awhile, mostly for the basic design and price point, of course, all the shining reviews since its been out haven't turned me away either :)
My favorite LGS has had them on sale for bit at $599 including two free 30round PMags....figured I better jump on it.
I picked this Sport up yesterday. Outside of the chinsey handguards it seems very well built. The Sport is also remarkably light and easy handling, nice trigger too. I'll get out in the next days. I plan to top it with a riser/Bushnell TRS-25 micro-RD and that's it.

I know guys that own them and I have shot a couple of them. They shoot like any AR15 and are reliable, good accuracy. The ones I shot had 1-9 barrels and handled M193 well, steel case ran OK. What's not to like?

Have the TRS on mine too. It works well, and with 1/8 twist, it stabilizes 69 gr quite well.

Where's your flash hider?

S&W changed up the design specs of the newer M&P Sport. They did away with the muzzle device and went with a crowned end. Also the old clunky rear sight is gone, replaced with a Magpul MBUS from the factory.
Both changes I'm happy with, plus CT still has some odd AWB laws on the books that I'm not getting into here, but it makes "flash hiders" a no-no.....

Oooohhhhh...gotcha. I see your location now. I'm in MO, so I've got the flash hider, and mines only 6 mths old, so I've also got the MBUS, not the old sight.

Now I learned something(happens occasionally :rolleyes: )....The crowned barrel must be for states that require "compliance".....You'll notice that the bayo lug is also absent on my CT rifle. While I'm at it, what you can't see is the stock is also pinned.

Now that you mention it, I thought you had it all the way out for pics! Damn, I need glasses.

I figured that the bayo lug was gone being that the barrel is sans muzzle device, but golly mister, you guys have it rough on the coastlines!!!
 
Best warrantee and customer service in the industry, so absolutely no reason not to buy if you like the price and features.
 
I bought the "standard" model once they started doing their own tooling. It has a chrome lined barrel and carry handle..etc.
I love it. It is one of my favorite rifles. I have a DD V4 , all it does now is sit. The M&P is my go to AR. I am very interrested in trying the melonite M&P.

No sir, its a "Sport" no dust cover, forward assist or heat shield in the handguard and the trigger guard is molded in. Not CT law, just how they are made to save cost.
 
It looks like about the best deal going for a low-cost complete rifle requiring no assembly. You might find some better features for the money if you put together your own lower and buy a complete upper, but not everybody wants to do that. I have shot those S&W's and they are nice rifles. They have some features that set them apart from the other ARs in the $600 price range, such as melonite (nitrided) barrels, 1/8 twist instead of 1/9, the fact that they actually come with a rear sight, and the aforementioned warranty.
 
I've had a M&P15 Sport for a few months and just love it. I ain't jumping out of helicopters in the middle of the night during a sandstorm, so I don't miss the foward assist or dustcover. Honestly if it's raining outside I will not drive to range, so the Sport does me fine.

It's a solid performer and spot on with the Nikon P-223 scope. I could have forked over more $ for a "real black gun" and cooler optics, but I don't think I'd be smiling anymore after my range sessions.

Very happy camper, no regrets whatsoever at all...

I'd take the Sport to war. Has just as good of a chance of failure as any othe rifle. Dust still gets past a dust cover.

If it DID fail, that's why I own AKMs.:D
