How can I tell what bullet diameter my Mauser requires?

Now I know this is most likely simply, but I'm still very new at this. I have a M38 Turkish Mauser and I need to know whether it needs .318 or .323 bullets. It's 8mm (and on the barrel).

The smaller 8x57J bore .318" was a WWI German thing soon rectified with the 8x57JS .323" bore on all later Mausers.

If still in doubt, slug the bore by driving a soft lead fishing sinker through it with a brass rod and measure it with a dial caliper or micrometer.

Thanks, I appreciate the info. Saves me a lot of headaches. I can't imagine a Turkish one redid in 1944 was using the WWI type.
