I fiddle with log "drop" carvings. I have a cypress drop with the following dimensions:

Diameter 11 inches
Circumference 37 inches
Height 33 inches

I would like to carve a .45 ACP 230 grain cartridge to proportion. Your help would be much appreciated.

How about this:

Case diameter: 9.6 inches
Case length: 18.0 inches
Overall length 25.5 inches
Bullet diameter: 9.0 inches

Thanks magoo. I'll send pics when I am finished.

Well, I'm certainly not a math expert .

I just looked at a cartridge spec and multiplied by 20 and rounded to tenths to try and give him the largest possible finished product.

I picked 20 because it seemed a nice round number based on his raw piece, and I rounded off for convinence. I don't know how conservative he was in his measurements for turnable wood. It could be optimized by x20something.

Did I use bad specs or do bad math though?

"No, no and NO! you'll be turning our beloved .45 into a nine."

Nine as in 9mm?

(I didn't check the spec, but I think your math is ok, just a funny result)

That's where I was goin'. I just thought it rather ironic that a .45 of any proportion would be a 9 anything.

Cool idea and good math.

You know, if your piece of wood was a little larger than you said, you could just go straight from mm to inches and the proportions would be the same.

Bullet diameter .452 in (11.5 mm)
Neck diameter .473 in (12.0 mm)
Base diameter .476 in (12.1 mm)
Rim diameter .480 in (12.2 mm)
Case length .898 in (22.8 mm)
Overall length 1.275 in (32.4 mm)

Make that 11.5 inches bullet diameter, 12 inches case diameter, 32.4 inch length, etc.

Thanks Jorg. That is what I was looking for. I wanted it to proportionally correct.

Carve a M1911 to the same size to chamber that round. Functional slide and everything.
