Welcome to the Centerfire Match for the 3rd quarter of 2012! This match is open to any centerfire rifle. This match is meant to be challenging and educational, but most of all FUN. Hopefully it will get you out to the range and shooting your rifle. If you have one handy, make sure an bring a friend too.

->Iron sights and non-magnified optics and red dots. Shot at 25yds.
->Scopes and other magnified sighting devices. Shot at 100yds.

There are Three Rifle Classes in the magnified division (only one for the non-magnified division):
->Unlimited/Benchrest Rifles (highly modified/custom rifles, machine rests, heavy rifles (over 20lbs), very high magnification optics [over 20x] may be used).
->Target Rifles (modified rifles, rests, heavy rifles (over 10lbs), high magnification optics- over 10x [with an upper limit of 20x] may be used).
->Sporting Rifles (Includes All Non-Target Class Autoloaders, Bolt Actions, Single Shots, Pumps, & Lever Rifles). Rests/sandbags/bipods are not permitted in this class, but shooting sticks (either the crossed or walking stick variety) are allowed. Use of a sling is encouraged. Shoots may be taken from any position. Rests/Sandbags/bipods are not permitted in this class.

25 Yd. (Irons) Target: See image in the link below. Scale to 100% on standard 8.5x11in. paper. The objective is to fire three shots at each bulls. The target is scored as indicated, with Xs awarded for shots completely within the 10 ring, for a maximum available score of 120-12x.

100 Yd. (Optics) Target: Same as above.

When you are satisfied you've done your best post/attach (or shoot me a PM) a photo or scan of your target with as much of the following information as possible: Forum name (or name you want posted in the results), Rifle, make, model, vintage (if known), Sights/Optics (with magnification if applicable), Ammo (or load, if you care to divulge your secret recipe), Position, Distance, Conditions (in/outdoors, wind, temperature...). Multiple submissions are allowed (in same or different class with same or different rifles).

Self-scoring is encouraged and appreciated. All submissions due before September 31st.

Maverick, Do you have a link to where I can purchase a bunch of these targets? I really like the them and want to keep some of these on hand.

I might have to wait until next month to shoot this match. They are almost ready to start the gutting & remodel of my local indoor hundred yard range. Too dang hot to sit out in the sun at my buddy's place to shoot this outdoors right now (over 100 every day and no chance for early mornings at his range due to the horses.) I'll get there today for the rimfire match, but like I said, probably won't be able to do the "big boy" match until next month or later - we'll see.

I don't remember where I found them (I keep a big folder full of targets in reserve, this is one of those) and I'm not sure if they sell them, but I'll see if I can find the site or at least make a .pdf when I arrive back home this afternoon.

I might have to wait until next month to shoot this match.

...and that's the beauty of a quarterly match (that and plenty of time to best your last score). Hope your range opens back up soon.

Sorry Jim, but I was unable to find the author of the target. I don't even remember how long I've had it in my inventory, so they may no longer be in business (if it was in fact a business). That said, I did create a .pdf of the target so it is easier to size and print.

I will say that I only accept targets that are not copyrighted, are available for reproduction for personal/non-profit use, ones donated by friends, or ones that I have created myself, so while I make no 100% guarantees copyright should not be an issue for your personal use...print and enjoy!

That's close enough for me. I keep a big folder of targets myself. I need to go through and separate them into smallbore and centerfire to keep from having to figure out which is which

No problem. I did likewise a while back and it does make finding the right target a great deal easier...particularly if it is a vaguely named .pdf.

Got to the range this morning and fired at a couple targets. Threw out the first one as guy on the lane next to me put 3 rounds in one of my targets. Range manager had a few words with him for shooting cross lane. It was obvious the holes weren't mine as he was sighting in a new scope on a .308 and his windage was that far off! They took him and his rifle upstairs to bore sight it for him and I finished my shooting before he came back down so I don't know the outcome after that.

2nd target turned out pretty good but it was pretty hot and humid down in the tunnel so I didn't really shoot my best. I'll take it for this month though and look forward to cooler weather or air so I can shoot outside or better ventilation or a/c for the firing points after the remodel.

Distance: 100 yards (indoors)
Class: Unlimited
Rifle: Savage Model 10 Tactical, 24" heavy varmint barrel, 1:9 twist, .223/5/56 with a BSA Tactical 8-32 X 40 scope set to 20 power.
Ammo: Hand loads, Winchester 62 grain open tip match, flat base bullet over 25.0 grains of Alliant Reloader-15. Cases were new, primed Lake City military brass from a military production overrun.
Score: 120

Actually 10. All 3 shots in each target were completely within the 10 ring, no white cut except for the lower right target. The bottom center hole is completely in the black but the two to the left of it grabbed a bit of the 9 ring.

Need a blow up shot of it like I did for Jeff_12 in the rimfire thread? I can do that if you like.

Boy do I wish I had the foresight to get more of those 62 grain Winchester match bullets from Midway. I only got 500 of them and I should have sprung for a couple thousand. They are flat base, open tip (not true hollow point) match bullets with a crimp cannelure that were made for that FBI "barrier breaching" ammo also made by Winchester. I did manage to grab a thousand rounds of that stuff when it was available and when they also listed the bullets for reloading I ordered 500 to try them. Once I found out they were the exact same bullets I tried to order more, but it was WAAAAAY too late.

I have a load with the 68 grain Hornady BTHP match bullets using Varget that comes very close, but the 62 grain bullets over 25.0 grains of Reloader-15 is marginally better. Rather than bother to caliper the OAL, I just did what Winchester did and seat the bullet right to the center of the crimp groove. I also went back to the original 24" barrel on the model 10 and re-sold the 26" fluted stainless one. Managed to get back what I had in the stainless barrel so didn't get hurt on it. Guess I'm getting lazy - didn't want to take the time to work up a perfect load for those extra 2 inches of barrel. Besides, a chemist friend of mine says blued barrels cool better. The thermal emissivity (I know, BIG word) of polished stainless is much lower than blued steel so polished stainless barrels don't cool as well and I sort of believe that as subsequent shots tended to walk up and right as the barrel heated. They don't do that with the blued one. Maybe there is something to his theory after all.

I DID grab a thousand of the 68 grainers when Midway was selling them as "blemished" bullets. Only blem's I've found so far were some slight discolorations on a few of them.

I just got a fresh clearance from my cardiologist to go back to shooting .308's again. Turns out the diagnostic problem they were having was a bad memory location in the pacemaker and they re-programmed it using external signals from the diagnostic device. Went to the range with my doctor's 30-06 deer rifle and put 100 rounds down range - no glitches!

Guy on our local forum has a real nice Remington 700 he's trying to move. He's a Marine sniper, back from the sandbox and it's one of his personal weapons. Has a 20" threaded heavy barrel and comes with Leupold rings and a Harris bipod (no glass, but I have a 10-40 X 50 Tasco World Class target scope that I was given.) He says it will clang a 6 inch steel gong at 600 yards with the right ammo. He's also throwing in 200 pieces of Lapua brass that's been fire formed to this chamber! He wants $700 for the whole works and I'm trying to snag it. It does have a weird camo paint job on it, but it is paint and most likely removable without too much trouble. Dang, I'm getting too old to get this excited over a nice rifle!

Sounds like a fair deal depending on the model (I'm guessing either a 700SPS or a 700P?) and/or upgrades (stock, bbl, et cetera).

It's a 700 LTR, synth stock and looks like a standard 20" barrel. I misspoke earlier also. The local guy just back from the sandbox got It from an Oregon police sniper when they switched to a different platform. Package includes:
1- Remington 700 LTR with 20" 5/8" x 24" threaded barrel.
1- Stainless steel custom thread protector for barrel.
1- Jewell trigger
1- Desert Warrior adjustable cheek piece.
1- Harris bipod (not pictured but goes with the rifle)
1- Leupold Mark 4 1 piece steel optics mounting base
1- Set Leupold Mark 4 Medium steel 30mm scope rings

The front sling stud is broken off, but I have the tools to replace it and that isn't a problem. He was asking $900 for the package but nobody was biting and he finally got it down to $700 so I went and looked at it. Still gotta dredge up the cash tomorrow, but it's doable and aside from the Krylon paint job, it's a sound rifle.

Pix is from the other website and doesn't do it any favors, but I figure once I get it and get that Krylon camo-botch job off it it should be pretty decent. Guy I'm actually getting it has shot it out to 600 and claims to have been able to make decent hits there using heavy bullet handloads. I don't know the barrel twist, but will measure it when I get it and figure the bullet weight accordingly. I've still got some 168 grain SMK's on hand, plenty of Varget and I'll start there.

Sounds like a smoking deal to me. I agree with you regarding the "finish", but that's an easy fix. BTW, it should be a 1:12 twist, which is fine for all but the heaviest bullets (175/180s should work, but 190s might not stabilize).

After further discussion and checking a bit more into that Remmy 700, it's origins are a might suspicious so I declined the deal. Figure better safe than sorry.

Here's my first attempt at this one. Very humid today as it rained for about 30 after i got to the range. Then it was almost unbarable but I was there and it did quit raining so I went for it. The first target was me making some scope adjustments. All six shots on the top row were aimed at the top left bull. The bottom left bull was the best group today. Lastly the one for score, by my count 104-2X. Not terrible but I know the rifle can do better, I just need to step it up. Maybe some better ammo as well.

Kimber 22-250, Remington 40gr UMC, 100yds, 85ishF, 1000000% humidity

Thanks for the kind words. I was kinda rushed after waiting out the rain and trying to give the rifle time to cool down between targets, I just barely got to work on time.

Headed to the range today with intentions to shoot my new AK in this competition but forgot the sight adjustment tool. For fun I shot anyway and scored a 28, shoots low and right. Decided to go with the 1891 Argentine shooting surplus SF86 ammo, iron sights and a breezy wind blowing left to right. First target was figuring out the rough holdover needed. No time other than loading the next three rounds was taken between groups and I shot sitting at a bench unsupported. Looks like a 73, maybe a generous 77.

If I understand it, only the sporting class has to use cross sticks? So if the rifle has a scope, can be shot from a bipod or from a benchrest?

You don't have to use cross-sticks (or any other style shooting sticks) in the Sporting Class, but you can't use bags or a rest of any kind; you can fire it unsupported in any position, and slings are allowed. In the Target Class rests are allowed, with the exception of machine-rests, which defaults to the Unlimited/Benchrest Class, where any support is allowed and any shoulder fired rifle and optic is allowed.
