Hi again from New Zealand, Radagast,

I picked up a 4" Model 66 no dash at an auction for a good price on the weekend, serial 9k73070.
She came with (unnumbered) magnas and red insert front and blued rear sights.

Can you please indicate a DOB?

Your Model of 1985 .44 Target Stainless was manufactured in 1985. There was a run for Lew Horton Distributors, the 624 Combat Special with a three inch barrel between 1985 & 1987. The AHT serial range & ALW serial range were used for this variant, with AHTxxxx guns shipping in mid 1985.

As a follow up, I spoke with S&W this morning and was assured the gun in question was made after after the ones with the potential cylinder steel problem. The representative estimated it was made early 1986.

S&W record the shipping date, rather than the frame manufacture date. This makes sense for warranty purposes as some slower moving variant may sit on the shelf for a year or two before shipping.
AHTxxxx guns shipped June 1985. That doesn't mean your gun did though. the frame may have remained unassembled until an order came in, or the completed gun may have stayed in inventory for a while.
With the faster moving models such as the 686, or in earlier years the Models 10, 19 & 66, its safe to assume that it shipped shortly after manufacturing.
With less common variants I've noticed some have shipped up to two years after their place in the serial range would indicate their manufacture date. 8 inch Model 29s, and 6 inch Model 66s after the 686 came out are examples that come to mind.

The N4xxxxx serial range was used in 1977 & 1978. My guess is 1978.

how about a DOB for a Smith and Wesson 686-4, model BRF2XXX?

I think I found it listed in a few other posts - looks like the BRF Prefix started in August 1994.

Your gun could be one of several models:
First Model Russian. Serial range 1 to 20000, manufactured 1871 to 1874.
Not likely, as guns for civilian sales began round serial number 6000.

Second Model Russian: Serial range 1 to 9000, manufactured 1873 to 1878. If a commercial gun the barrel will be stamped RUSSIAN MODEL or REISSUE July 25 1871. This will have a spur on the trigger guard.

Third Model Russian: Multiple serial ranges, one of 1 to 9000, manufactured 1874 to 1878. REISSUE patent date, trigger guard spur, large thumbscrew on topstrap.

New Model Number Three:
No spur on trigger guard. Short ejector housing. Manufactured 1878 to 1912. Jesse James was killed with serial number 3766 in 1882, which narrows your time period to 1878 to 1882.
