Just a small thread to tell about my experiences with the new Springfield XDs that I just purchased 2 weeks ago.

I have a growing collection of guns that I have purchased over the past three years..some were designated for carry...some destined to range duty only. I love 1911's, but they are not that comfortable to carry.
I bought a M&Pc in 9mm and 40 cal. Ended up trading the 40 cal..and kept the 9mm. It carrys OK..but still..not the most comfortable . I really didn't want to change my waist size in pants..just to accomodate a concealed carry weapon.

Then I saw her...the XDs. Small, thin, lightweight...hhmmmm...looks interesting! The guy swore that it had a manageable felt recoil and was VERY comfortable to shoot! Still didn't believe him completely. One of the guys at the store offered to let me shoot his own personal XDs. I didn't have any ammo with me except for 200g LSWC's, so he gave me a little bag of 5 hardball rounds. Now..I won't get in to the fact that he gace me 3 45ACP's and 2 45GAP rounds. One bullet got jammed in the barrel. Fixed problem...banged the bullet out...got 5 fresh rounds of normal ammo...and proceeded to shoot. 5 rounds...at 25 feet....in a dimly lit range...bad eyes...no eye glasses...put 5 rounds in a 3" circle. 1 1/2" left.

I bought the gun at that point and went down to the range to fire off a few more. 150 rounds...230g RN. Not one failure to feed...not one jam..not one failure to eject...NUTTIN!! Accuracy was nothing short of outstanding! The only complaint that I could muster up is the uber aggressive patterning on the front strap of the grip is a small bit uncomfortable..but easily ignored and the grip doesn't support my pinky..which can be rectified if need be by ordering the extended and higher capacity magazine from Springfield. The gun holds 5 plus 1 in the chamber..which should get the job done as long as I do my job correctly. I took the target out to 33 feet. In most day to day scenarios that I could EVER encounter , 33 feet would be waaayyy past my needs to consider discharging the firearm. Again..superb accuracy!!

The reason I'm so amazed by this little beast is this. I've fired a lot of small compacts in 38, 9mm and 40 cal. In fact, I bought a Ruger LCR in 38 for carry..and the stupid little thing can mess up the hands after 30-40 rounds. It just isn't that comfortable. I like to practice and shoot my guns...a lot! This XDs..I can stand there and shoot off 200-300 rounds and it wouldn't bother me! The trigger is pretty smooth and breaks pretty crisply for a small carry gun.
There is no advantage to having a CWP, if you ain't going to carry. That permit does NOTHING for me if I leave the gun at home or in the car. With this little pistol, I get...
  • .45 caliber (I LOVE that round)
  • Accuracy (usually a sacrifice on a small gun)
  • Shootability (missing on other makes and models)
  • Quailty (reputation)
  • Did I mention accuracy????

Just wanted to tell you all about my budding love affair!

I own one as well ..got it 2 weeks ago...so far close to 500 trouble free rounds thru it...I really like it a lot..The XDS and my 9mm shield are my 2 best purchases in quite a while...

I played with one in the LGS the other day. Liked it. I could be a buyer in 9mm.

Just got mine a couple of weeks ago too. Love the thing! WAY accurate, 100% reliable and much more comfortable than it should be. Very concealable.

Glad to hear you like it so well.

I picked up mine a couple weeks ago and had about 5 failure to fires, with off center primer strikes, for every 100 rounds I put through it. This was with my normal reloads (starline brass, 7.6 power pistol, 185 gr Montana Gold JHP, CCI large pistol primers), and Hornady Crit. defense 185 gr. rounds.

Based on other peoples reviews and the support at Springfield I am guessing it may be a limp wrist issue, so I am going to try and change my grip and stance a bit when I get it back. I cleaned and lubed it per their exact directions prior to both range trips, but this did not have any benefit. The thing that keeps bugging me is I have only had 1 FTF with all of my other semi-auto handguns (M&Pc 45, XD 9mm, XD subcompact 9mm) and a limp wrist issue would only show so pronounced with the XDs. I decided to send it to them yesterday to see if they can recreate the FTF issue and if so located the source.

The groupings I did get were better than with my M&Pc 45 and the felt recoil was equal to or less. To say the least I love it other than the FTF issues (which may be user related).

I tried the factory Hornady Crit. defense 185 gr. rounds. Actually they were the first 20 rounds I put through it and had 2 FTFs out of the 20. I was starting to think I should change to a heavier 230 grain bullet but based on what Springfield said I figured I grip it tighter and lock my supporting hands wrist first...change 1 thing at a time.

I was debating buying some Winchester 230 grn. fmj factory ammo (and will when I get it back), but since I have never had these types of issues before I decided to send it in to be looked at.

Springfield said the limp wristing would cause the slide to go back slower/less force than it should therefore the round would not go fully into battery and cause the off center primer strike and FTF.

Those who have not had any issues with your XDs what ammunition have you been using?

I have a full size .45 XDm and after thousands of rounds I have not had one reliability issue and the only issues with accuracy come from the shooter. On good days at 7 yds, I can keep it within an inch, but on bad days I still keep it within 3-5" Springfield XD's and XDm's are excellent choices. Congrats on your purchase.

Congratulations on your new toy and possible carry piece. I want one, but I"m holding out for 9 or 40 so I don't have to reload another caliber. I have three XDs and love them.

chrt396: Congrats on a fine pistol. Have experience with several XDs(no single stacks.. yet), currently own two, and they're as good as any pistol I've owned.

smbaas: Next time you call Springfield, you may want to ask to talk to somebody that actually knows how their pistols work.

I use my own reloads consisting of Berrys 230g RN over 4.6g Tite Group with a CCI LP primer. No issues..at all!! ZERO!

C'mon!!! Get some 45 dies!! Easy to reload..accurate...good stopping power...soft recoil...I love 45's more than any other caliber!!

owned a sub-compact 9 that i sold never any problems. Never had a problem of any kind with any xds, shot a bunch and own a XDM 9 bought it when they first came out ,straight slide serrations not the curved ones. And missed the sub so much bought another one but this one a .40. Great guns accurate reliable great feel and shootability cant ask for more.(except they could be made in America and not in Croatia) but some of the best handguns i own and i am a collector of fine pistols.

I have both XD40sc & Shield .40. The shield is lighter & thinner than my XD, so my EDC is my Shield. Regards to HD, I rotate between Walther PPQ .40 & my XD 40 sc.

Ive had my XD-S since last month. Ive put over 500 rds thru it with no problems...... recoil is very manageable. Much more controllable then a P11 or PF9.

just bought one yesterday.

This thing is a blast to shoot. Very manageable recoil and very accurate.

Love the front fiber optic sight on it.

To those having light strikes on their primers, I had it happen to me but only once. After I cleaned out the firing pin chamber (easy to do, there's even a video on YouTube that helped me), I have not had that problem any more. Something I learned in my Glock Armorer's Course...with ANY new auto, you got to clean out that firing pin chamber right off the bat because those making the guns don't always have the same love for pistols that we have. So crap can get overlooked in those chambers in production.

Now, for a problem I can't seem to rectify: accuracy. I can't seem to get accurate groups with mine. Anyone else got that problem??

That is what's shocking!! The accuracy of this little gem is amazing for such a short barrel. Without really concentrating...I was putting them dead center in a nice tight group. THAT is what made me fall in love!! Even at 33 feet..it is STILL a marvel..to me! Now..if it looked more like a 1911..I'd be more in love..but I'll adjust!! Something about wood grips that gets me excited..but THATS a different topic!! :)

I also picked up an XDs a few weeks ago and I am amazed at how accurate the little gun is and how relatively light the recoil seems. I reviewed the gun and took some pictures (www.operationswift.com) and show the relative size comparison to a Glock 19. The two guns are surprisingly similar in size but the XDs is much thinner. The gun also seems to be very reliable. I have 300 rounds through mine now without cleaning and have had zero malfunctions of any kind. I am looking forward to picking up a few extended mags for it when they become available.

I really like companies that listen to customer wants/needs and then innovate around those desires. Springfield in my opinion is one of those companies.

Had a chance

To get my hands on one today. Fit me well. $650 for a two tone at gander mountain. No deal At that
Price point but I liked it well enough to probably make one my first .45 at some point. despite six roundS. Nice balance, acceptable trigger, ambi release, and for an XD the bore axis was lower than I expected.

I 100% like the XDS and it may be a good fit for some people, so long as we can all agree that 45ACP is not magic.

Positives:

Like the front sight.
Nice size.
Nice weight
45ACP

Negatives:
recoil (haven't shot it, but the videos I see look a bit snappy)
5 shots
45ACP (yes, I know)

XDS is another great option though overall.
