Looking for a new hunting rifle.

Try a search first. These new rifle treads get covered atleast once a week. Not many bad rifles today no matter if the rifle cost 275 dollars.

You really should just get out and start looking around for something that catches your eye and then do some research on it. These days, all of the larger manufacturers have lesser expensive versions of their rifles and apparently, they all shoot well.

Since I'm in south Louisiana, we don't really need a rifle capable of precision long range accuracy, so almost anything that goes boom will do. If I were you, I'd just look for a model with a stock and trigger that I like.

For starters, I'd look at models from Remington, Savage and Tikka and concentrate on the ones in stainless, if possible. You may also do well to take a look at the Stevens models, if you can find one. I think they were discontinued.

Not much of a forum if all we ever say is "search". Personally, I like talking about rifles, even if it's repetitive.

I think that for a smidge over $600, its tough to beat a Ruger Hawkeye M77. Under $600 would force me to buy a Savage 110 with the birch stock.

If detachable box is your thing, Savage and Tikka may warrant a gander.
IDK if there's anything special about the Hawkeye.

I don't have the experience with centerfire rifls that most of the guys here have, I've been a died in the wool black powder shooter for years, but I can say that I just picked up a Weatherby Vanguard in .270win & for the price, I can't imagine I could've got anything much better. I had the same budget of $600 & after a lot of looking around the Weatherby seemed to be the best rifle for the money. It also left me enough cash to buy a decent used scope, new mount, sling & enough ammo to get it sighted in

Cruise the Pawn Shops with cash in hand. 270's are about the most common hunting rifle out there and you can get a good one for a reasonable price.

You will be surprised at how many affordable ones there are out there.

Does $600 include the scope? You can get the new Ruger American in .270 and a decent scope for that money.

For that price I recommend either a Remington 700 SPS or ADL Synthetic. Or if you want to go real cheap a Stevens Model 200. You can get the 200, plus have a trigger job and a scope for close to $600. As for a good scope that's bargain priced I recommend a Nikon Prostaff either 3-9x40 or maybe a 4-12x40. You can get either one for under $200, the 3-9x40 around $150-$160 and the 4-12X40 for about $180-$200. Midway has it on sale for $179.99 right now with a mil dot reticle. You can get a rail and Weaver style rings for under $40 I think or Leupold dove tail front with windage rear screws, base and rings for $45-$50. I put a Rifle Basix trigger on mine and love it. The trigger cost me about $85.

Hey, if $600 doesn't include the scope, you can get a lot of rifle for that kind of money. If that's the case, I would go for a Stainless Steel SPS Remington or maybe a Weatherby Vangard. I have a Howa action on a custom build that I love. The Howa 1500 action is what a Vangard is. They are some smooth, accurate actions.

The Howa I have is barreled with a Krieger 26 inch Stainless barrel in .250 Savage. I left it in the Howa stock because it is a good bit sturdier than a Remington or Savage Synthetic stock. In fact, I have another rifle in a Bell & Carlson synthetic stock and the Howa stock is about as rigid. I put Redfield style Leupold brand rings and bases on it and I have a 4.5-14x40 Nikon Buckmaster scope on it. This is a true half minute rifle if I do my part. In other words, the Howa is good to go.

Savage, Howa, Tikka, Weatherby, Remington. You pick. I like Savage for its accuracy, cost-effectiveness, and floating bolt head.

Don't overlook the Marlin X7 rifle.

If you could streatch your budget just a bit, you can find the Savage 114 American Classic for around $660. If you limit is firm, you might look at one of the Savage 111 models with synthetic stocks. Still nice guns and should be available under $600 retail.

Of course if you are willing to look at used guns, with a bit of shopping the Remington 700 and Winchester Model 70 can both probably be found in your price range, and are both excellent choices.

I have one in .270win and it shoots like a freakin lazer. Very impressive for a hunting rifle. On a budget, I would save a couple hundred on the rifle purchase and apply that to the glass. I have hunting style Savages and Remingtons that cost more than the TC Venture, but they will not out shoot it.

Edit: I think the Savages cost about the same as the Venture, I think. Regardless, the Venture is the most accurate sporter weight rifle I own.

Howa m1500, weatherby vanguard s2, savage 11, tc venture or dimension, mossberg 100atr, marlin xl7, stevens 200. The choice is yours, personally I like the howas and weatherbys as they have been the most accurate for me.

I personally think you would have a hard time doing better than a Tikka in that price range, I have two and love them. I do think, in that price range, you should also take a look at the new Vanguard S2s, they are getting great reviews, and there is a box mag model available. If you were looking more i the $350 range, the Ruger American looks like an excellent deal.

I'd go hit the gun store, and play with some of these rifles to see which ones fit you best and have the best action/trigger.

How about a Axis XP Camo...................MSRP $464.00, order it from Wal-Mart & you can probably get it for around $400 + tax, leaves you some money for Ammo.............
