It has been a long 6 or so months since I started this project. My goal was to start from scratch and build an accurate rifle from a much maligned platform, the lowly mosin nagant. This was all new for me, my first cut/crown, drill and tap, bluing, wood inleting, ect all done by my lonesome. I can't stress enough how important research is when undertaking a similar project. This started as a barreled action made in 1896 bought at the flea market for $75. Not just any mosin nagant but a Finnish capture that had a Tikka barrel installed in 1942. Total bluing loss and no bolt.

The good news was the rifling is pristine with a shiny bore and sharp well defined rifling along all 31 inches (!) of the barrel.

First up was some angle iron and a hacksaw. Trimmed to 21 inches, filed muzzle square and did my first crown. Metal prep took close to
a month to get all the nicks and imperfections out. After 20 careful coats of Oxpho Blue we were starting to look good.

Next up was the Boyds stock in classic pepper laminate, inlet and free floated entirely, including cutting the bolt relief.
Now the part I was most concerned with, drilling and tapping the reciever. I went with a Rock Solid scope mount, considered
the best and most durable mount on the market with 3 mounting points. All went well much to my relief.
The Warne Maxima rings arrived last week and I mated them to a vintage steel tube Weaer K6 that matches the rest of the gun
nicely.

Using PPU 7.62x54r 150 grain softpoints, I am seeing groups a tad under MOA at 110 yards.

So what do you think, good or bad?

Yes!!! I'm excited for you. Fill us in as to how it shoots! I'm lusting after a Finn myself, so I'm following this with interest. Congrats.:)

Rifle looks great! I don't personally love how hight the scope sits, but it's just me. Nice little project and good on you for doing it all yourself! Better than I coulda done, for sure.

with the right barrel theres no reason it cant be accurate, i still dont like having to reach so far forward to grab the bolt handle vs that of a mauser type... causes a person to have to shift a little more than neccessary.. but then i notice your bolt handle brings that much further back and lower to fix the problem...

hmm, i think youve inspired me to buy a cheap action for my own project sometime in the future.. really shows what difference a better barrel makes in these (mine shoots around 3MOA)

That is sweet. I usually do not get all that excited about chopped up old rifles but having a MN of my own it's hard not to like the job you did on the rifle.

Ditto on the Weaver mounts, but you did some great work and found a super example to start with. A real heirloom to keep in the family. Well done!!

Nicely done. I would have kept a couple more inches on the barrel and I would need a cheekpad to get a good weld but other than that it looks great and wow under 1MOA for an old military rifle (even a Finn) is great with off the shelf ammo.

I've always had phenomenal accuracy over the years from shorter stiffer barrels, at 21 inches the blast is no worse than my M44 and tamer than my Guide gun with 16" barrel in 45-70. I got a pumpkin head and actually have a decent weld, though have considered while building an ATI universal cheek rest.
