promag vs tapco ak74 mags

I cut my 30 round Tapco down to 20 rounds and use it for bedside duty. They aren't as good as surplus mags in durability but they work. I avoid Promag completely. They are just plain crap.

I used Tapco's for a while... They're ok. No comparison to surplus steel, though.

ProMag though.... ProMag is like a 50% success rate. Tapco's only problem is they're all polymer, so they won't last as long as steel. And I've read the 30 rounders can crack if dropped full. Don't know if it's true, but makes sense. Between the two, Tapco all the way.

I've heard of far too many bad experiences to recommend ANYTHING with the brand name "Promag" on it. Its one of those companies I honestly do not understand how they manage to stay in business, when positive reviews of their products are an absolute rarity

My AK came with a promag. The plastic seemed very brittle and I would think it would be easy to crack. I have never held a tapco mag but they seem to be the go-to 'merican made mag.

I've used both... TAPCO is decent, Promag is awful. TAPCO also has good customer service if you ever need to use it.

I got a Promag in a trade recently (came with the rifle) and I threw it as far downrange as I could then shot a bunch of holes in it to ensure no one ever tried to use it. They're just terrible mags; nothing more to say there.

I have both. Promag( I only have 2) are pure junk. They are in my junk box, they never fit, even after some generous file work on my part, I don't give up that easy. They didn't feed well either. The Tapco( I have 10) work great! Never a problem, NEVER. I also have some steel bulgy, romak, and chinese. Avoid promag like an --deleted--! I made the mistake of getting promag mini-14 mags at the same time as the ak promags. At least you asked first, better than I did. Worst $60 I ever spent.

ProMag specializes in turning perfectly good guns into jam-o-matics. Absolute garbage. Their AK magazines have weak feed lips and locking tabs. They break extremely easily.

Tapco magazines are pretty solid. Fairly durable and feed well. I have one on my Golani to replace the worn-out and completely unusable magazine it came with.

Promag drop test. Loaded my 7.62 promag with 30 rounds. Drops were at 4 feet on a concrete floor. Drop one was with the mag horizontal. It survived but did cough out one round. Drop two was vertical on the base plate. The mag exploded with the base plate poping off. Nothing broke on the mag however I lost the base plate retainer on drop two so I could not do feed lip drops. I did wack the snot out of the mag body with my ASP and was not able to beak it. I also performed the same test with a steel surplus mag and it was able to retain all rounds and not explode.

Well fatcat, I could have told you the steel ones would survive. I drop them for fun these days lol.

I knew the steel mag would be fine but I felt like my test should have a control.

Buy once, cry once comes to mind. I wouldn't put anything but GI mags in a rifle like that. It is one of the most reliable firearms ever made... no point compromising it with cheapass plastic mags.

The only reason to ever buy a ProMag is if you need live fire practice clearing feed failures.

Agreed 100%. I have one Promag that came with one of my rifles. I felt it, could tell that it was soft plastic, pulled back on it and the front lip ripped right off the mag.
