Who uses a compact .40 similar to the S&W Shield?

I was curious about how a light .40 caliber would handle. The M&P Shield is only 19 ounces. The grip is pretty narrow, too.

What are you using that's similar? How does it handle? Is it a real palm-pounder? Or can you shoot it with some measure of pleasure?

by the way, I held a Shield today and I'm betting it's going to be a huge winner for Smith and Wesson. I liked the feel of it and it seems like it would be pretty nice to conceal and carry. My only concern was whether or not .40 caliber would make the thing a beast to shoot regularly. I'm not really interested in owning a 9mm (for various reasons).
 
I carry a Glock 27 Gen 4. It is definitely not as narrow as the Shield but it is only 19.75 ounces, if memory serves. I won't say that it is the most comfortable pistol to shoot but I can put 100 rounds through it in a shooting session and not have it bother me. 100 rounds is what I usually shoot per trip regardless of which gun I am using.
 
Seems to weigh the same as a 27. Not a super fun gun to shoot for hours, but not really that bad either, honestly if your frame of reference is polymer .40 pistols it's not all that different.

I imagine the Shield is probably about as heavy a recoiler as the 27, just a bit skinnier and so probably a little sharper at the same time.
 
I have a .40 PPS and a .40 SW99. I'm not sure if it's the way it fits my hand or the duel recoil spring, but the PPS recoils less. The grip of the SW99 is smother as well, friends complain about its recoil.
The PPS is not bad at all in .40, and you only give up 1 round to the 9mm.
 
I have the M&P 40c which is the double stack version of the Shield basically. I don't have any trouble at all with the recoil it. In fact, I prefer the 40 over the 9. I haven't been able to hold a Shield yet, can't find them anywhere around here. I would be surprised if the Shield was any more difficult to manage in 40 than the 40c is though.
 
I have the SR9c and I love it, so the SR40c could be a choice for you. Ruger makes great guns so check them out as well as the Glock 27.
 
There's a .40 Shield mocking me 4 blocks away at the LGS. if I didn't have a timing belt to pay for on the car...

It does feel good in the hand and the price is right.

I honestly don't really like polymers in general, but ONE compact pistol in the collection wouldn't hurt, and I do respect how well my .40 M&P full size has served.
 
The Kahr CM40 seems to fit your criteria, I believe it is smaller than the shield too. I've heard good things about the cm and pm series from kahr.
 
9MM v/s .40

I already edc a G-23 in .40 S&W.

But I own a G-27 in same caliber and its not as much fun to shoot,even though I can shoot a box w/o pain or flinching.

I got to shoot a lady friends S&W shield in 9 MM and I do believe that it would be NO fun in .40 S&W.

Due to the thin grips and the light weight.

I am a fan of that gun in 9 MM,in case your looking for a vote.

I say stay away from light weight .40's as they are not fun to shoot .

Meaning that you wont shoot it as often and therefore become as good with it.

If your young and tough as I once was,that might not be a consideration.
 
My .40 shield has a bit more muzzle flip than my 9mm shield. Neither one isrough onthe hands when shooting. The shields dont focus as much force on the hands as a .38 snubby does. 50 rounds of non +p in my jframe and my hand gets a bit sore.

That's really good for me to know. I used to own a 642 .38 and with the hard plastic grips I put on it it would pound pretty hard.
 
Kahr CW40 here, probably a little smaller than the Shield. I've used all kinds of ammo with negligible differences in felt recoil. My first 100 shots or so were without the Hogue Handal (sp?) Jr. grip sleeve. After 3 mags, my hand would start to ache a little. However, with the Hogue sleeve (bought for 9.99), I can do several mags without any ache at all. It was mostly the checkering that was a problem and the rubber sleeve fixed that all up.
 
.40 Shields would be nice if the mags didn't eject automatically after every shot. Mine's vacationing at S&W as are many others until they find a fix.
 
same here- I parted ways with my Glock 27 in favor of the PT740.
there are some reduced recoil (reduced power) factory loads on the market one could try if full power 40 cal ammo is too much for your smaller 40 cal pistol
 
I've been trying to decide myself whether to acquire a compact carry gun with a bit more firepower (not necessarily more rounds, just a bigger punch with each one) than my .38SPL J-frame, and since I can't see why I'd gain very much moving from a .38 to a 9mm (ooh, that's gonna irk some folks), it's down to which .40 it'll be.

I might just hold out for release of the .40 Nano, which Beretta says will be next year.
 
Considering you get one that functions well (had a couple lemon glocks.) the glock 27 is the best as far as my opinion goes. if you go with a little bigger size the xdm 40 compact is my favorite 40 subcompact.
 
the baby Glocks are great but I already have a 19 and a 32 and really couldn't see much diff in concealability (sic?) going to the 26/27 size pistol.

the Taurus PT740 really is Slim. the outstanding trigger is a bonus as well.

I stopped by that LGS today and the gun was indeed mocking you, I can't repeat the language here. I'm pretty sure he was saying he'd be going home with some punk that didn't deserve owning one. If I were you I'd forego the timing belt and ride the bus for a few weeks.
 
I have a Kahr CW40 and an XD40SC. The CW has more recoil, but not a challange to handle. The added weight (marginal) of the XDSC does make a difference. I carried the Kahr for 2 years and shot it weekly with no issues. It has however been replaced with an XDS.
 
I just bought a gen 4 G 27. I was looking for a G26 but found a like new at a great price, at least for around here. They had a slightly cheaper gen 3 but I really liked the grip better on the gen 4. I've shot 40 in the past, never owned one, and was always put off by the snap i experienced although I never before shot the gen 4 Glock. I have to say I am pleasantly surprised at how soft the G27 shoots with a variety of ammo. Reason for the ramble is that a few prior posts criticize the G27 for recoil and I wonder if my experience is due to the difference in the gen 4 frame. It is a fat little beast, however, but I like it.
 
I do not have one, but I know someone with a px4 storm compact that really likes it. I have put about a magazine worth through it and like it.
