What do you do with your gun locks?

Since I am the local chapter president of Pack Rats Unanimous I am obligated to keep all of mine.

A few have been relegated to security duty in the lock-down handle of my trailers. The cable goes through the hole that lines up with the latch in the down position. In addition I also put a hitch lock where the ball would go into in case the trailer thief brought his cable cutters along.

Our state law requires handguns be purchased with a lock, and that if it doesn't come with the gun you must provide proof of purchase of an approved lock not more than 30 days old, so no using the same lock for multiple used handgun purchases. :cuss:

Sigh... but it's for the chi'drin...

I just throw them in a box along with my misc gun parts. The only nice ones are the ones that come with Rugers. The little plastic discs that "function" as a trigger lock (Bass Pro is big on them), those go straight to the garbage.

I used mine on a cheap toolbox when I was a mechanic.
I originally had a problem with a coworker 'borrowing' tools, until I started locking the box. I tell the guys "Sorry, don't borrow my tools anymore" and the only change is he would actually close my box when he was done.
So I lock the main toolbox. Now my sockets stay in place, but the larger tools from the separate box--with a padlock loop- still wind up elsewhere.
So the padlock loop got a nice thick lock with 'Mossberg' printed on it. That's when my air tools stopped wandering.

I just toss them. They tend to be cheap locks that are easy to pick or force and not worth keeping around. The guns I keep in a safe.

For all those who fret over keeping a gun in the car, leave a gun lock and pull a bit of chain around your seat base and lock up your gun when not in the car.
There not like a bank vault but it will stop the common theif.

one is used to secure a gate, one is used to secure my dog pen, the rest are awaiting some other service yet to come. being that I keep all my firearms secured in a safe, none of the locks are used for their factory intended purpose.

I use the cable locks for extra security for my motorcycle. They lock the front wheel to forks real nice and are also great for securing helmets to the bike. The trigger locks just collect dust in one of my many "spare parts" boxes/buckets/coffee cans.

i usually slap them on my personal and parts lockers at work. i'll give the spare key to a guy on my crew in case i'm not there and he needs something i have stashed. otherwise, it's no big loss if someone else on another shift has to grind the lock off my locker to get to something they need. in other words, they're expendable. locks only keep out honest people anyway.

I think the only guns I have bought new have been Rugers. I love their sweet rubber coated padlocks, use them on cabinets in the garage.

Lots of good ideas here, especially the motorcycle helmet. Now if I can just find one of those action locks...I know they're around here somewhere...

I had a bunch of the cable locks, and a few trigger-guard locks. I kept the cable locks and used them on my motorcycle (both to secure my helmet and lock the front tire to the fork). The trigger locks I generally left in the "take a penny, leave a penny" box at the range. I know of a few guys who needed a trigger lock and got one of my old ones. I do keep a couple floating around for the occasional time when I buy a gun and don't feel like paying $5.00 extra for a lock. I have yet to come up with another use YET, give me time and my "engineering mind" will come up with a use.

I live in a free state too, but my new guns still come with locks.

Same just like how the Ruger Manual...and its interesting...has the state warnings. I only use them when I have a handgun. I might use them as a backup as my daughter is now walking. I do want to asap teach her what they are and how she does not touch them, BUT anytime she wants to see or learn about them Daddy will always make the time to show her and explain anything about them.
