Which rifle to get? Hmmmmm

While the .270 is a fine caliber one generally chooses a caliber for a rifles intended application. For general hunting Whitetail Deer as an example the .270, 30-06 or any number of calibers are fine. Some people also consider the cost of ammunition. So what is your intended application?

Yes, intended application may play a role and influence advice. But without any further information I'd take a new Savage over a new Remington, the Savage being less expensive and typically more accurate out of the box. Savages are easy to swap barrels out on yourself too. The 270 Winchester is a versatile cartridge and a good "all around" chambering, just select the proper bullets and loads for the task at hand. Just my opinions, take them with a grain of salt.

I'd definitely pick up the Savage over any new(er) Remington without second guessing myself. The only Remington id be intrested in myself is something from the custom shop. Have you checked Tikka out? No personal experience but everyone whos shot/owned one swears by them and they're relativily cheap. I played with one at cabelas and was pretty impressed. 270 would be a good general purpose caliber too.

I have a savage 110 in270 and a 111 savage in 270 both have taken many big Wisconsin whitetails, I have inlaws that live neer Belgrade MT, and they hunt everything with 270's and they do hunt everything , bison , bear, deer , goats, elk,, if you plain on takeing long shots at larger game you may want to look at a mag, 270WSM 7WSM, 7RM 300win mag or a 300WSM , but if you are going to stay with in 400 yards a 270 is all you realy need,

A Savage Axis in .308 or 30-06 wouldnt break the bank to buy or to shoot. Also available in .270...

More expensive rifles would be more accurate I'm sure, but it might be something worth looking into.

a 270 is the only one close to a mag without going to a mag or handloading something else on the hot side, and you can get rounds heavy enough for bear ,I'd go with a barns-X solid and take head shots, others would say take any shot the 270 will do the job , I just don't like tracking lol,,I know guys that have taken bear with a bow , just take the right shot

For a do-it-all gun, the 30-06 is hard to beat but the 270 comes close. I have hunted with both calibers and would take either one at any time. That said, I must confess that I have taken more game with the 270. One Ruger 77 has taken 22 whitetails, 2 mulies, 2 pronghorn and a bobcat. Nearly all rifle companies chamber both rounds. Savage was one of the best buys for several years but are priced up with the big dogs now. They are still good but no bargain like they once were.

I have a Winchester Model 70 in .270 Win. absolutely love the .270 Win. cartridge great all around choice. As for what to get Savage makes a great rifle I am still on the fence when it comes to Remington products...always have, so I say go with the Savage.

Nothing wrong with either - but since you didn't say which Savage, two pennies says to make sure it's an Accutrigger model, the difference is easy to feel.

.270 is a great, versatile cartridge for anything bigger than a bunny and smaller than a grizzly. Surplus .308's cheaper to shoot if you don't handload, so that might be a good alternative if you plan to push a lot of lead downrange.

If it is for mostly range use you can get 308 ammo cheaper. If you decide to hunt with it a 308 is plenty for anything in North America. The 270 or 30-06 will offer slightly flatter trajectory and energy numbers, but not enough to matter in the real world.

I've shot more mulies than I can count with a .270, not to mention pronghorn, and even a couple of elk, I even shot a medium sized white tail with it. Of course mine is a much older Remington 700 BDL Custom Deluxe, I bought new in '71. The farthest I've shot was a large mulie that according to my Bushnell Range Finder was just a tad over 500 yards, that deer turned and took about 2-3 steps and went right down. Yes a .270 is a very versatile caliber, and if I had to do it again I'd probably go with the Savage, cause they are one of the most accurate out of the box. Remington's new ones aren't near as accurate as their older ones from what I've been hearing.

Savage for sure, but I'd get the 10/110, etc. Not the Axis.

I have a Savage 10FP in .308. No complaints. Cost effective and very accurate. Took two deer last year and shoots MOA out to 400 when I'm not screwing up.

270 and 30-06 are my best sellers. Beat the others 2 to 1.

Jack O Conner made a career out of the 270 Winchester. For everything but big brown bears it will do fine if the correct load is used.

Millions of hours have been spent discussing the virtues of the 270 verses 30-06. Elmer and Jack killed untold numbers of trees in this pursuit.

If you are going to hunt most Mule and or whitetail deer a 270 will make you very happy. If you find your self hunting Elk the 270 will get that job done as well.

I have a 700 in .270 as a deer rifle and its great. Great rifle, great caliber... For deer. If you don't honestly believe you'll be using it for hunting very often then .270 will prove to be a very expensive plinker. As far as I know Remington more or less owns the market with their Core-Lokt stuff, which is about a dollar every time you pull the trigger. While its a great gun, it doesn't get shot very often for that reason.
ETA: as far as power goes (as you mentioned in the original post) .270 will kill any animal in North America. It may be sub-.30 cal but it's a belted magnum that packs a punch.

Either Savage or Remington 700 is a good choice as are 270, 308, and 30-06. I prefer the 700 in 30-06 and have one in 7mm as well. But I would not fault any of the other choices.

I've been hearing good things about the new Ruger American--just to muddy the waters a bit. Maybe I am an old fuddy-duddy, but I think the 30-06 is the best all around cartridge.

right , it is not a belted mag , however it is close to what most would call mag power, 2900fps only just under what a true mag will do, so it is close , but still not a mag ,
