October Rimfire Match:

I won't be able to shoot till next month. local watershed that the range is at is closed for hunting season right now. I had this target before from a free site so this seems like it will be fun. I'll have to give it a shot (pun intended)

I may be done for a while too. Having some more vision correction work done and not sure just how long recovery is going to take. Going in for pre-lim's tomorrow (Wednesday).

If all goes well, I should be back close to 20-20 and won't need glasses except for reading and real close-in focus.

So disappointed that between my honey-do-list and weather conspiring against me, I was unable to get to the range to shoot this one while I was home. We'll see if I can get out to the range in November; THAT depends partially on how well I shoot in the field at brown furry antlered targets.

Range got busy and had another left hander riight next to me shooting a .300 Weatherby. He was on my left side and didn't like my hot brass landing on him (I was there first BTW) so I just packed up after the last target (one I'm posting). Might not be able to shoot any more this month as they are going to a reservation system pretty soon - all the hunters re-zeroing their deer rifles for the upcoming season.

Great shooting but I'm not sure how you come up with that score...

Unless I am reading the instructions wrong, in which case I apologize.

The target is scored as indicated and any shot that touches both the positive and negative point values is scored as the difference (e.g.: if a shot hits both the 10pt value and -7 point value, it would be scored as a 3).

EDIT: Sorry, my eyes aren't so great, I thought all the values in the black were negatives. Thank goodness for ZOOM!

The positive numbered targets are the ones with the white dot on the head. They are the target hiding behind the good guy. The good guy target has the all black head. Negative scoring when hitting him.

I thought Jim's target probably could add another 5 points on that lower right target.

Haven't frequented the site in a long time...something I am regretful of. I hope to add at least one target to the iron sight division...although this looks like a real tough one. I see Jim is still running things on the marksmanship side...I'll be hoping just to stay in the positive numbers!

I used a CZ 452 American in .17 HM2, Leupold 18x scope from a bench. I shot 4 targets, but my best was actually my first. Others had better groups and more hits, but I managed to hit a good guy on all but the first one.

Working on drying the target off enough to get pictures that show the holes:

Hi gang,
I was hoping to be able to compete in this month's match, but I just had eye surgery this morning to correct a vitreal membrane/retinal "pucker". The membrane was attached to the retina in multiple places it should not have been and causing severe distortion in what I could see with my right eye. It was coincidental to an auto accident where I was rear ended a bit over a year ago and then appeared to be aggravated by cataract surgery in that same eye. Turns out it was just that, coincidence.

On recommendation of my regular optometrist, a local Opthalmic surgeon used one of those really fancy Zeiss laser scanners to do a cross sectional examination of the back of my right eye and discovered the real problem. He performed surgery on that eye this morning and according to him, all went as close to perfect as possible. Took about an hour, I was awake the entire time and I'm back home after my wife and I had breakfast at Cracker barrel.

I'll get the patch off the eye tomorrow morning and the Dr. says it's my call, but I should be able to drive by Thursday and the vision in my right eye should be really improved to the point I'll need a prescription change for the right lens in my glasses. Sure hope so as I've spent a year having to mostly keep the right eye closed to be able drive or to see anything close to normal.

I'm left handed and left eye dominant so I'd be able to see to shoot anyway but I'm not allowed to shoot for at least 2 weeks so that the instantaneous pressure wave caused by the muzzle blast (of even a .22) doesn't mess up the healing of the incision in the eyeball. Guess I gotta stay away from the range for a while.

Glad you won't be out of commision for too long! I was afraid that they were messing with your shooting eye. First afraid of complications that could adversly affect your shooting and secondly afraid of improvements to your eyes that could cause you to beat us all even worse than you do already! Take it easy and get healed.

Hey Gregaw, thanks - I appreciate the sentiments. Having learned marksmanship in the Army many years ago, my object here is not really to beat everybody, but challenge you guys enough to improve your marksmanship to the point you consistently beat me regardless of what some have said trying to make me out as an egotist that can't stand to be beaten in these matches.

It's all good clean fun and to paraphrase what someone once said, "A bad day at the shooting range is still infinitely better than a good day at work."

I'm 70 and do have a cataract developing in my shooting eye that will eventually have to be addressed. Fortunately it isn't bad enough yet that they want to work on it. I do have problems shooting with iron sights even at 25 yards and do much better with optics. Good thing the optics categories aren't shot at 25 yards though as even the worst gun I have (the little Crickett .22 LR I made a survival rifle out of) will pretty much put decent ammo into one ragged hole at that distance - not quite so good at 50.

The Savage 93R17 .17HMR will put 'em into roughly 1 hole way out to 100 yards if pretty much ANYONE just points it in the right direction. That thing is scary accurate. With those Hornady V-max bullets ya don't dare hit a squirrel in the body or all you're gonna bring back is the tail. Shoot 'em in the head and you might not even have to clean 'em, just skin 'em.

Might have to spring the bucks for a suppressor though, them little buggers are getting smart. Even as subdued as the .17HMR report is, first BANG and that's the only one you're gonna get for a couple of hours around here.

Thanks guys, came through the surgery just fine - I'm seeing much better out of the right eye now and won't be able to shoot anything until probably middle of next month. Gonna need a new lens prescription for the right eye too, but it's going to continue to improve for at least another month, so gotta wait for that anyway.

Fortunately I'm left eye dominant and it was the right one that got worked on so current shooting vision isn't changed. The developing cataract in the shooting eye isn't quite ready yet so probably have to wait until next year before I can get the left eye matched up with the right one.

Meanwhile, I'll watch what everyone else does here and make snide remarks when called for - or maybe even if they aren't.

Glad all went well Jim. Mav is right it def wouldn't be the same without you.

Went to the range this weekend with Savage FVT. I was hoping to come back with a target (that would most likely have been worthy of Jim's snide remarks ) but the smallbore range is 50 yds...and due to the fact that its a Westchester county public range, the range officer was having none of my request to move one of the targets to 25 yards. My weekends are full for the rest of the month, so unfortunately I doubt I'll get a target in for October.

I really need to join a private range.

Might be cheaper than joining a private range in your neck of the woods.

I will never abandon my irons . But I probably should invest in a scope for one of my rimfires.

A private range may not be worth it for small-bore alone, but considering they charge $12/h for large bore (which consists of a 100 yd range at which you must be seated at a bench with no more than one round in the rifle at any time), I am greatly inclined to look.

$12/hr for a 100yd....?!?!?!? Ooohhhhhh you live in New York my condolences. Lol. I pay $40 Per Year for an outdoor 25 yrs pistol 25,50,100,200 yard rifle unmanned do whatever you want as long as its within the basic safety rules and doesn't interfere with other people shooting.

You mention irons, do you compete in the target/unlimited or sporting class usually? I have one irons one scoped both sporting.

$40 per year sounds absolutely wonderful. I have a friend who lives way upstate who belongs to a range comparable to that, but here downstate shooting ranges aren't too easy to come by. My biggest gripe about the range is that I can't even practice shooting prone or standing. I have been wanting to get into vintage rifle competitions with my K31. It's not like I see myself winning anything, but I would at least like to be able to practice before entering anything.

The rifle I generally use for this match (I haven't been a part of it for months, but plan on being a regular from here on out) is a savage with williams peep sights, so I believe that puts me in the target/unlimited class.
