I'm pretty excited. I've got some land upstate, and rifle season for deer opens on Saturday.

The land is wooded (mostly oak) and I've got a Marlin 336 in 30-30. There's a ravine/gully/whatever-you-want-to-call-it that runs pretty much directly through, and I've seen deer using it before. I think they're on their way to a marshy area near the edge of my property to get a drink, so the plan for Saturday is to set up against a tree near the edge and see what comes by.

I got a bottle of estrous scent, but I'm going to try first without. I took off a couple days of work, so I've basically got all week to see what works. And if I get a buck early, I'll have a .22 along to see what little stuff I can find :D

Also, my fiancee is coming with me. She isn't interested in the hunting itself. Instead, she wants to handle the field dressing. Should be a good time :D

Any last minute tips?

Sounds like you have a keeper :p

Have fun and good luck. Have no tips for you as I'm heading out on my first deer hunt in many years in two weeks.

I will always remember my first hunt.

Remember, the deer can see you but they smell you first. You can wear as much camo as you want or the "scent-lock" stuff that is suppose to mask your scent. But if you hunt with you wind in your back, then you are not hunting at all. Always have the wind on your face.

Have FUN! Good luck!! Be safe!!

Yeah.....get your fiancee a good pair of rubber gloves for the field dressing. :D

Only thing better than being able to enjoy the outdoors is enjoying it with those you love. Good luck and have a safe hunt.

All of what BP said AND
if you're sitting on the top of that ravine in the evening, your scent will be carried right down to the deer at sundown by the thermals. You're fine hunting there in the morning though. (Heat rises, cold falls.)

a tree stand, the portable climbers... that's my tip. Don't leave it there though, they tend to be stolen, as do ladder stands and cameras and anything else you leave behind. Don't you hate crooks?
Also, KEEP YOUR MOVEMENTS SLOW! When I first started hunting I thought I needed to yank my gun up quickly before the deer got away. What I was really doing was telling them I was there so that they actually did get away. SLOW!!!!
Good luck to you!
