7mm 08 thoughts

Not sure what your intended purpose is for the rifle, but I like the 7mm-08 round. It is efficient and mine is accurate (Sako A7). Actually I guess its the wifes rifle, but it drops deer within a few steps and is a pleasure to shoot. I also have a 30-06, but it seldom gets shot.

I don't own one. Have a safe full of other guns including a couple of 308's that have become my favorite. I'd like to have a 7-08, but I ain't selling the 308's and can't justify another rifle so close in performance.

But.... if my house were to burn down and I lost everything and had to start over a Kimber 84M in 7-08 would be the 1st, and maybe only rifle I'd buy with the insurance money.

Much like the 308 it is a well balanced round that shoots flat, has little recoil and with the right bullets will kill anything in NA. Most would consider it on the light side for larger game, but it actually beats traditional 7X57 loads. The 7X57 has been around since 1892 and has killed every animal on the planet, incuding a bunch of elephant.

Nothing wrong with the 30-06, it is the round I've hunted with more than any other. But as I've gotten older I have realised it is simply way more gun than 99% of shooters need. If a 7-08 or 308 won't do it, you really need a lot more gun than a 30-06.

257r, 6.5x55, 7x57, 260 and 7-08 all seem to sit in a deer rifle cartridge sweet spot.

I recently added a 7-08 in the form of an encore bbl, I'd always wanted one and getting something softer shooting than my 06 for the kiddos was a plus.

Me n the boys have shot it quite a bit now and I'm really liking it. Recoil is there but not abusive yet on steel at least it seems have pretty good oomph! I look forward to loading for this round in the future.

I figure that in the more common deer loadings, a 7mm08 is a .308 with ten grains less bullet weight. I doubt that Bambi will ever know the difference.

Excellent caliber ideal in 140grain killing power, light recoil, historically a tack driver.

This January I'm repurposing a Savage 22-250 action into a 7mm08 for my daughter, going to go with a Krieger barrel more than likely. It will be a fun project for us, she'll have it ready for our June TX hawg slaying event.

well ive talked to several gunsmiths this week and not much can do to my Icon.I went today to my local sho and looked at a remington 7mm 08 nice feeling gun anyone have one and how do they shoot or would you go 30-06

3. What do you want this new rifle to do? What will her job be?

In my Tikka T-3 the 7mm08 is a absolute tack driver. The 140 grain hornady SST's and a good charge of 4064 and she purrs like a kitten.

my 7-08 is a rem SA left hand with syn. stock and it sure is a good deer killer and lighter than my rem 700 left hand 3006. i shoot 43grs varget with the 120gr nosler BT bullet eastbank.

Yep, 7mm-08 is one of those "just right" cartrages, well setup in every way, and the ballistics are better then its parent the 308 I have one in a Browning A-Bolt, nice little gun.

After coming to enjoy deer hunting with my XP-100 in 7mm BR, I set out to get a rifle chambered in it for hunting hogs at night. Money was tight back then and I wound up with a model seven with mild 7-08 reloads.

I have a rifle in 7mm-08 that I plan on swapping over to .260Rem in the future. Lately I have been having second thoughts on switching as I have already bought 7mm-08 dies and can share bullets with my 7mag. The rifle is planned to be a long-range toy\dedicated heavy range rifle.

I just bought some RL17 and 150gr. SMK last night so we will see what happens with those. I am still probably going to get the .260 barrel, but the nice 7mm bullet selection makes me think twice about switching.

I would advise you to stay FAR away from any new Remington until CCM can get it's head out of it's @$$ and fix the QC issues. Right now Winchester/Browning, Savage, and Tikka/Sako are makeing vastly better firearms often for less money. I own all of the above, and while the Winchester has the best feel the Tikka is the best all around rifle.

I have a model 7 in 7-08. Have had it for a decade or better and it works just fine for deer size game.

I don't shoot one but I can highly recommend the 7mm 08. One of my deer hunting buddies bought one on my recommendation and he thanks me all of the time.

Reason I don't shoot one is simply because I already have 6.5x55 which is very close.

7mm-08

Mild like a 7x57 mauser, only shorter and loaded to higher pressures. A proven killer of deer , black bear, and elk at reasonable ranges (300 yds & less)

LH Browning Micro, and couldn't be happier with it. Stepped back from a 7mag, and this is the sweetest shooter I've ever owned. Tried a lot of different ammo, mine will cloverleaf 4 shots on 100 with Federal Fusion, and scored 2 one shot kills in MN this season. Took a while to get here, but it's fast becoming my go-to gun. AND it's a pound lighter than my 7 mag

A overly simplistic way to look at it is a 7mm-08 is a 7mag minus 150yards with the reduction in recoil that comes with it.

My 7mag 150 gr Winchester premiums at about 3000 fps while the 7-08 goes out at about 2700 with 140 grain Fed Fusion. Essentially the same bullet, just a loss in fps, but on deer sized targets, the mag appears to be overkill on shorter ranges, but would shine for a longer-distance hunt. I sight 1" high on 100 yds, and I think the drop on the 7-08 to 200 would be about 1.5 from POI and the 7mag would be less than an inch. For MN deer, the 7mag just destroyed the shoulders on anything less than 150 yds. My reason for the change was:
1. Over a pound lighter with a similar scope
2. 8" shorter overall
3. Short action, see #1
4. one more round in the mag
5. Back to a satin finish wood stock
6. Less hydrostatic shock and less tissue destruction

I'm building one now. Building it n a M77 receiver that was a 243.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'nice feeling gun'. It feels the same as every other short-action rifle of the same model. What is it you like about it?

It's really a better deer cartridge than the .30-06, which is really more than is necessary.

With everything else being equal, even a slight difference in bore size can make a tangible difference in the way a rifle balances.
