the guys on Guns&Ammo forum have thing called a "bullet box"

someone popped for a med size USPS flat rate box, and put some bullets in it he didn't want/need any more.. them mailed it to another member.. who took what he could use, and added what he didn't need.. passed it on.. etc..

I have some .30 Carbine bullets I'm never gonna use, plus some .38/357 and some 9mm stuff that's just collecting dust..

(and when I say "some" I mean a couple hundred)..

anyone think it's a good or bad idea?

Sounds like a great idea. How do they share their addresses? PM's one at a time?

I was initially going to say the only thing I ever need is common stuff that others would be unlikely to give away (9mm, .45 auto, .223, .308) but obviously you are willing to part with some 9mm stuff.

Sadly, the only thing I have to offer is a few dozen .38 special and .40 S&W brass that got mixed into my box. I usually sort it out at the range, but if it finds its way home with me, I never want to throw it away.

Could you throw other (non-reloading) stuff in the box? It would no longer be a strictly "bullet box" but I have a lot of random stuff I will never need again, but hate to throw away....standard AR Grip, rings and rail for scope mount, riser mount for AR, etc. None of it is high-end stuff (UTG, factory rings and such) which is why I upgraded, but someone may benefit.

yeah. They post in the thread when they get it, and post the "inventory"

PM goes to the holder from the guy that wants it next..
recipient takes what he needs, adds stuff to it..

posts the inventory as it's ready to go..

most of the time I've seen, shipping is about six, seven bucks..

and the rules are simple..
NO BRASS
NO PRIMERS
NO POWDER
NO LOADED AMMO

the latter three obviously due to haz-mat,
the brass rule because
1. it's bulky. Seven pieces of rifle brass take up the same space as 50 rifle bullets
2. You never know for sure if it's ready to separate, etc. Same principal as "Don't reload for anyone else, Don't shoot anyone else's reloaded ammo"

Well, with the "no brass" rule, I don't wanna play. I've got a couple hundred once fired .40 S&W brass and a double handful of misc. brass that I don't shoot/reload. If I have some bullets that I won't want/need, I usually melt them and cast into something I'll use, even jacketed or plated...

which is fine..

if you want to set something up with someone else and use the box as the method of transport, no one is going to be the wiser.. BUT.. unless someone is specifically looking for something, keep brass out of it because a box of 100 rifle bullets in say, .30 cal., takes up the same room as about ten rounds of 30-06 brass..

basically, yeah..
when one member posts on the thread and says, "OK, here's what I took, here's what I added, who want's it?" First PM gets it.

as far as the specific stuff, I'd ask the next recipient before just tossing it in there, as the next guy is responsible for shipping it to the guy after that..

Basically, you're paying the shipping to get rid of your junk, except in this case, it's to someone who might be able to use it.

This is an awesome idea.

I think a bullet box, and a brass box, would be great.

To whoever starts the box off, buy some gorilla tape, and go to town on that box.

just as an example:
Box arived today, here's the current inventory after I took the .312" 150gr RN out.

Current inventory
35 - Horn .277" 110gr V-max
15 - Cast .375" 255gr FN
50 - pulled M855 .224 "green tip" 62gr FMJ
32 - Cast Lyman #225415 .225" 55gr
75- Horn 303 Cal .312 150 Gn RN -REMOVED
100- Hornady 30 Cal 100 Gn Short Jacket (30 Carbine anyone?)
100- Horn .257 87 Gn Spire point

Added:
50 Remington .264" 120gr Core Lokt
25 Hornady .284" 162gr A-max

Wonderful idea. I could use some dead soft lead. After I'm done melting them down, who wants the leftover jackets? :)

You could just set it up like a "pass". Essentially, just get a list of those who want to participate and put a cut off number on it (otherwise it'll run forever, which isn't necessarily a bad thing). I've done a few in the past for different items. Usually the list is limited to the first 25 or so people. Then the list of people is reorganized according to location (saves on shipping costs and time so that the box isn't constantly going coast to coast). After that just set a time limit for how long the box stays at one location (usually 3-4 days is a pretty reasonable time after receiving the box to take what you want and refill it, then get it on its way to the next person. You don't want the box sitting at someones' house for weeks becasue they forgot about it). Then once it makes it through the list, it goes back to the original sender if they wish, that way they can get some items from it as well, and perhaps send it on its way to a new list of people. That's how the majority of them I've been a part of have operated.

Or you could just setup a Pay it Forward type thread.

There are PIF threads.

FWIW using priority flat rate, it could go coast to coast without issue.

I think a recurring medium rate flat box full of reloading stuff is pretty spiff, myself.....

I'm in....

I've got

~150 Berry's 150 gr plated flat nose (think .30-30)
~90 bullets for .303 British (I'll check the weight)
a few ingots of smelted WWs

I'd like

anything for .45 acp
~130-140s for 7mm (.284)
