Which tactical .308?

A long time collector of vintage sporting arms, I now find myself conjuring up some interest in a tactical .308. Already have an M1A but like the idea of the AR style rifles where I can get a .243 upper to accompany it. But which one? have taken a look at the Remington R-25 and the DPMS LR-308. Any others out there and which are best? Are the uppers on these rifles interchangeable from brand to brand like the AR-15's are? Help me out here.
 
I don't want to thread steal, but is a 16.1" upper really all that for hunting like it claims. Does it 'fit' tactical? Sounds like...But how much am I giving up to the 18" or 20" in terms of real world accuracy beyond 100 yards (I am really asking this, I don't know, I'd like a good 308 that will serve defensive purposes primarily as well as hunting as well, but I'm an old school rifle guy so far.).
 
How many mag dumps are you really going to do with a .308 to warrant a chrome lined bore??? I'd take the Remington, if they came in anything but camo, because they were NOT chrome lined.

That said, we're buying the old man an FNH SCAR 17 for Christmas.
 
I have a DPMS LR 308 Oracle and it's a great gun for the money. Shoots sub MOA with factory ammo at 100 yards. Basically it's a Barbie Doll for men! There's no end to the mods you can make to the DPMS platform. Here's a picture of mine. As you can see I've done a lot of mods to it. The target shows a 4 shot group in the bullseye at 100 yards that measures .655".

Bushmaster, RRA, Stoner and, of course, the only one that can wear the AR-10 name: ArmaLite.

My preference is Armalite. They have 2 lower receiver versions: The standard that uses their Gen II mags (which I prefer) and the A model that uses P-mags. 21 models total I believe.

The Stoner SR-25 is a really nice rifle, but stupid expensive.

RRA uses FAL mags, which can be problematic in an AR.

I hear good things about the value of the DPMS rifles.

I know very little of the Bushmaster guns.

Armalite did adapt to take the newer pattern of magazine, but I'm still giving the tie to DPMS/KAC pattern rifles. Where they have the military contract, for the forseeable future, they will be the more standardized version. I won't be surprised if Armalite caves and introduces a model that is compatible with the other pattern. That's the main reason I am building on a DPMS Lower. Lightweight .243, standard .308, and heavyweight long-range .260. Same bolt face and magazines for all of them. Quality can be as tight as you want it to be, Krieger barrels and aftermarket triggers are available for all of them.

Hmm looks like it shows an eight shot group that is much larger.

As to which gun is best, guns from KAC and LaRue are head and shoulders above something like a DPMS or Remington. They are built to fill a different role than those guns. They also cost 3x as much as some of DMPS offerings.

But how much am I giving up to the 18" or 20" in terms of real world accuracy beyond 100 yards

Accuracy, nothing. You may even have a better performing shorter barrel. What you are giving up is velocity. Out to any range I would shoot at an animal a 16" barrel will get things done.
 
Barrel length well have minimal effect on accuracy, with optics, hardly any difference until you near the limit of the cartridge. This platform is inherently accurate, the accuracy is going the be dictated by the quality of the barrel, not the brand.

The 7.62 rifles do not share parts compatibility like the smaller AR15's. Differences in receivers, some of the small parts, barrel nuts and bolt. The different magazine choices is the most known difference.

I would recommend a ArmaLite AR-10 in either the A or B model. The A model uses the SR-25 magazines and the B model uses the modified M14 magazines. ArmaLite is the only 7.62 rifle with a life time warranty. The ArmaLite receivers are made from superior material compared to many other 7.62 AR's and offer a assortment of barrels from chrome lined 16" infantry profile the heavy 21" stainless target barrels.

Three manufacturers have held military contracts, ArmaLite, LMT and KAC.

LaRue doesn't offer a lifetime warranty on their targets actually. They have a one year warranty.

Do their rifles not count as products they make, for which they offer a lifetime warranty?

You'd think so.
 
I have an LMT MWS308 16" chrome lined barrel. These weapon systems are top tier and capable of bridging the "battle rife/precision rifle" gap depending on how they're set up. Mine is capable of sub MOA and can reach out and touch man sized steel silhouettes past 1000 meters. It's effectively an SR25 for a lot less $$$$s.
