Picked up an AK-47 Norinco with traditional furniture and a spike bayonet. The wood furniture is new, the metal is 99%. It came with a sling and one 20 round Chinese magazine. 7.62 X 39.

But...guns are like running shoes. You never know what you got until you use them a bit.

Had a Romanian SAR. It was OK, mostly reliable. (to some that means it was not reliable) Also had a Romanian WASR 10 w/bayonet and the works. It was much less reliable and had a tinny sound when it cycled, though it was more accurate than the SAR. It was also quite the looker.

And so now this one - looks just like a type 56 but it is not. In fact it is a modified MAK 90. But the seller did an EXCELLENT job on it. Says it has had 0nly 2 - 3 hundred rounds through it. Looks like it to me.

BTW, the seller said he could recommend Wolfe ammo. I have been away from shooting these for so long (10 years - yeah, I'm old) that I don't know all of what is out there. Any comments along this line are appreciated.

And, as it comes as no surprise to most of you, available AK's of all ilks seem to be much more scarce in the public market. Lots of Romanians are being sold at ever revolving higher prices. My SAR, now with a friend cost me $300. The WASR a little over $400.

I have to admit, for the history, the functionality, and YES -the looks, the AK is far and away my favorite rifle. Too bad Nancy doesn't like them.

If anybody cares I'll issue a report after my first range trip with it. Depends how cold it is here in NEPA so it might be a while.

Thanks for reading.

I'd LOVE to hear about your AK!

Picked up a AK74 from a friend that needed money for $400. Has a couple upgrades and came with 11 circle 10 mags and 900 rounds of mixed bag ammo, bought another 1080 rounds of surplus before it dries up. I think I like it more than the AR.

Its a century arms, they seem to get flak on line but it has been 100% reliable.

3twelves, you didn't get a deal. You just bought some mags and ammo that happened to come with a free rifle.:D:evil::what:;)

I had an Armory USA underfolder and an Arsenal. Both were fine. They shot well enough with Wolf ammo. They would have shot better with higher quality ammunition.

Uh...I know a lot of nuance can be lost in the written word, especially on an Internet forum, but my interpretation of his comment was that you got such a great deal that the cost of the ammo and accessories alone justified the $400 you paid. So in essence, you got a free rifle. (In other words, congrats!)

I may (myself) be missing some nuance, but it sounds like you interpreted his comment in a different, more offensive, way.

I took it as he was bashing my rifle, if he wasn't I retract my statements.

I'll rejoin the AK crowd this weekend, when I get around to converting my Saiga. Had a WASR for a while that I never had problems with, but sold it years ago....seemed like a good idea at the time :banghead:

3Twelves - sounds like you got a great deal - 1000 rounds is running arround $200-$250 by themselves. To get a modified rifle and that much ammo for $400 is a steal!

5.45x39 ammo is less than 7.62x39 ammo which sales for the price stated. Irrespective of that fact, it was still a good deal. Particularly accounting for the Hornady ammo which is of course more expensive. It was a very one sided deal in your favor. Honestly I'm not sure I would have agreed to pay a friend that little for it all, particularly if he was in need, but I digress.

Early EAA imported Zastava PAP modified by me to look like it's supposed to.

Before, I thought it looked awful, but it had potential:

After, Ironwood stock set in American walnut and a few other modifications:

I really like this thing now.

Golden tiger ammo from sgammo is apparently the best ammo for a good price right now. I'm new to AKs; got a vepr last month and a WW 74 yesterday so at this point I pretty much do what more experienced people tell me LOL

Here is something a little different. This picture is not the final version of this gun, but its got most of it.

The aimpoint sits as high as it does so that it will match the height of a magnified scope that sits in a QD one piece mount. Otherwise I would have it sit lower and use a smaller cheek riser. As it is, I get a good consistent cheek weld with both optics.

I didn't feel bad, he has tons of guns and buys and sells all of the time. Bought a Rem 700, Savage 10, AR15 off him also a while back, I always give him the buy back option if I where to sell it.

Girodin, question for you re: flashlight on the starboard side of the rifle, are you left handed? If not, isn't awkward to try to actuate the button switch on the rear of the tube of the light with your left hand?

Thanks.

I'm trying to sort out my weapon light just now, and not arriving at any good answers.

I actually swapped the light over to that side for the picture. However, now I have a pressure switch on it and a slightly different set up that is not pictured there. As pictured, which is basically just how I had it on the other side, thus the same issues present them self for reaction side shooting, I can hit it with my thumb in a left handed stance and hit it with my fingers wrapped under on the other side. I wasn't real happy with that set up though.

The thing for me with a weapon light is that my preference is to have something that I can activate easily both when I hold the gun right handed and left handed. Any gun that needs a light is one that I may need to switch shoulders with. Right now my preference is to have a switch on a top rail at 12 o'clock that I can hit in same way with either hand. This is how my AR is and one of my other long guns. The problem with this and a few other of my long guns is the lack of a 12 o'clock rail.

I'm trying to sort out my weapon light just now, and not arriving at any good answers.

Is it going on an AK? What rail? Do you already have a light or are you starting from scratch?

Too "AR" for me, but I like that jewel you've got underneath the rifle.

Hizzie, how do you like the MI SS extended hand guard? I'm thinking about picking one up.
