Is the Colt Python worth the $?

Good shooting! Looks as if you've gotten things honed in. As far as buying a Python, maybe not, but have you ever driven a Bentley? I've got a 6" Python I've had for several years, premium firearm. I just picked up a S&W 15-4 about 3 weeks ago, very nice revolver, will it replace the Snake? No! But I now have that option when I choose to try something else. You'll more than likely get some various comments about the Snake, good, bad, indifferent, but those that have them will swear by them hands down. Its what one wants in firearms, just like different makes of automobiles, if you once shoot a Python for awhile, you might have some varying degrees on whether or not they're that good, worth that much money. IMHO.

No. The Colt equivalent is called 'King Cobra' not the 'Python'.

Probably not if you just want a 38/357 revolver. Most any of them will do if that's the case. Your Ruger is a good example. I doubt a Python will shoot any better.

You have to want a Python, because you want a Python. If that's the case, nothing else will scratch the itch. I know, because I've owned most of the others over the years. Ruger Speed/Service Six, Smith & Wesson 13, 19,27 and 28, Taurus 66. They were all good guns, but none of them were the Python I wanted back when I was 21 or so and you could walk into a gun store and expect to find a NIB Python, but, even then they cost a fair amount more than something else.

I finally got a Python about a month or so ago. It really didn't cost much more than something else, but I had to look for it, and (1) be there at the right time, and (2) be ready to strike when the iron was hot. It's got some finish wear, but mechanically is in great shape. Made in 1964, I gave $800.00 for it.

Not to me but I do understand why it appeals to some folks. I'd rather spend my heavy coin on a nice single action.

They cost more now then second-hand Freedom Arms big-bore revolvers. It's 'Mitt Romney Style' kinda thing. IF you are curious (very doubtful) do Mitt Romney style Gangnam parody search on U-tube.

Looked at one yesterday for $1400. I'd rather have a really nice single action or two nice S&W's.

Personally I'd rather have a S&W model 27 ...over any Python...or King Cobra / or a S&W model 29 over an Anaconda..../ primarily because the S&W's fit my hands better...

but are Colts worth the money ...sure.../ depends on what you want...

are the colts more accurate ...not in my hands...

I doubt if your groups would be any tighter from switching gun makes....Is a Python worth the money? That depends on what the money is and what the Python is.

years ago, i had a 5" s&w 27 and a 6" security six; i wanted a python, but wouldn't shell out the $$$.

after getting an s&w 586 because it looked like a python, i realized i preferred it to the much pricier colt and still do.

It's worth the money from the standpoint that, unless you grossly overpay for it, you will easily get your money back and then some if you change your mind later.

For me, I'd buy a nice L-frame Smith and be just as happy, bank the rest of the cash.

I agree with some of the above posters in that the Python is the most beautiful gun ever made. From a functional standpoint I would my put 686-5 and my Gp-100's up against a Python any day (I've owned a few very nice ones). Personally, I prefer a nicely tuned S&W to a Python and the GP can be given a very nice action. While you might get a tad bit more accuracy due to the slight tapering of the python barrel, it's nothing that most people could ever take advantage of (1/2 inch at 25 yds...maybe) GP's and 686's are ridiculously accurate, as obviously is the Python.

It costs tons of money because it is gorgeous and has a mystique like no other gun in my opinion. It is off the charts in the cool factor (once again my opinion), and whether anyone wants to pay the prices people are asking is a personal decision only they can make. I would never pay 4 figures for one but I would have no problem with anyone who did.

Just keep your money. You don't have to buy anything right now. By and large new guns are over priced. If I found the exact python I wanted I would buy it. I would wait until I found a motivated seller with the python that I wanted to curl up on.

I wanted a Python for 30 years before I got one. It has been worth every penny.

I too thought I needed a python but after going to gun show after show and seeing unbeleivable prices I decided that I would get something else and send it out for a custom action job . This will be better than the python. I want something to carry and if receives a few scratches so be it. Just adding character as it ages. Functionality and accuracy means more than the name on the side to me.

I've never had much interest in Pythons...I think it's due to the ventilated rib which looks, to me at least, like an unnecessary affectation.

Your honda civic will get groceries as well as your Mercedes... is the Mercedes worth the money?

If all your worried about is decent mechanical accuracy, a Charter or a Rossi will do.

You buy quality revolvers because they have an intangible quality. They exude an air of craftsmanship, and hint of a mystical and romantic past that is gone from modern society.
