A lil excited about my first new B/P 1858 rem back ordered 2/23/13 so looking for a leather holster don't want to spend to much but would like a good one.
All the reviews i have found are very mixed so I thought I would go to the people I trust.
Some other questions I have........
Its new from Cabelas 1858 new army will it come with a nipple wrench?
I have found one extra cylinder new in the box $30.00 looking for 1 or 2 more used on the cheap.
I plan on loading off the gun will I need a cap installer?
And whats your thoughts on powder pellets?

Hey, good choice on the gun. Your Cabela's (Peitta) 1858 will not come with a nipple wrench, I wouldn't shoot it until I had one in order to clean it right away. However you choose to load it I would never cap it until the cylinder is in the gun and as a last step before firing. Make sure your extra cylinders are for a Peitta. Cabela's sells a pretty decent holster for about $25. Never used pellets before so I have no input on that one. Watch a few youtube videos on loading and shooting your gun, there are some good ones out there. Good luck and have fun!

A lot of folks complain about their cappers not working with the Remington because they don't fit into the nipple recess. Either the recess would need to be modified or the capper needs to be modified. Some folks do it either way or simply use their fingers.

I either use my fingers or a plastic TC Star 7 Capper which fits without any modifications. However, the caps still need to be loaded into the Star 7 Capper one at a time. And if #10 Remington caps aren't used which fit snug onto the Pietta 1858 nipples, then the loose fitting caps can fly off the nipple as they separate from the flexible lips & arms of the Star 7 Capper.
Squeezed or pinched #11 caps really need to be applied by hand, and a wooden dowel or the eraser side of a pencil can be used to seat the pinched caps with a firm push.

Here's where the TC Star 7 Cappers can be purchased:

This Rightnour Mfg. #ML063 revolver nipple wrench is one of best basic wrenches that's available for the price including shipping from an eBay seller, and it's made in the USA:

This slightly more expensive Ted Cash ratcheting nipple wrench is also highly recommended for revolvers, and is especially helpful for removing stubborn or stuck nipples. To avoid that problem, be sure to apply some grease or anti-seize on to the nipple threads.

Jeeptim the 1858 is one of the best to start out with. I can't add much to what has already been said but the powder pellets might not be the best way to go cause you'll be stuck with them and 30 gr pellets may not shoot the best groups you would want. I found that most guns shoot better with lose powder than the pellets because you can adjust the lose powder to what the pistol likes and get better groups out of your pistol. Plus for now you should be able to buy the lose powder at most gun shops and wouldn't haft to order the pellets and pay the haze mat fee. If you ever get a brass frame gun I'd stay away from the pellets cause they will turn brass guns into wall hangers real fast. I do go along with the Ted Cash brass cappers. They hold a lot more caps than the stright line cappers and the Ted Cash ratcheting nipple wrench. Just keep in mine which size caps your going to use. Most pistols like the Remingtons and the Colts do best with Rem #10s so if you order the ratcheting nipple wrench you get the right size nipple end for the wrench. When I got mine I had to pick between the #10 and #11 size end. That's my two cents worth. :)

Welcome to the brotherhood of the blackened.

Cabelas has inexpensive holsters. I like the slim jim style. The flap style is a classic too.
Read the stickies at the top.

You will enjoy 'rolling your own' ammo, big-bore bang, smoke rings, fire, brimstone, history, accuracy and more.

I like a flap holster, you don't need an other caring case to transport the gun.
Here is a Dixie Gun Works listing:
HL7420 Remington Model Holster HL7420 Remington Model Holster $15.95
I have my concealed carry, so sometimes I just put a loaded pistol under a blanket right on the seat beside me. Actually my '03 Colt .32 is there most of the time.

jeeptim you got a list that should almost be room for another bp pistol. :D

You forgot something to keep all that stuff in!

A Pietta Remington works best with Remington #10 caps, you won't need the #11s. Same for the .451 balls. They'll barely shave a ring as the chambers average .448. The .454 is a better choice.

Which size flask spout(s) did you get? The sweet spot for real BP in these guns in 28 grains.

How about a cleaning kit with black powder specific bronze brushes? The Traditions kit is too short for an 8" barrel. And it's not all brass and rusts. You'll also want, if you don't already have one, a plastic tray of the kind used for transporting cakes, so you can clean the gun in it with scalding hot water.

Buy another off GB until yours comes off backorder! hehe
