Prior to today, my son had gone hunting six different times and never seen a deer. Today was his last chance for this season and he went even though the temperature was in the thirties.

Persistence paid off, this buck came from behind us, walked close to the side of the tent, and drank out of a creek 5 -7 yards right in front of us.

At this point my son was not ready to shoot because he got tickled (nervous?)and was covering his mouth trying not to laugh, but still made a couple of noises that the deer heard; thank God the deer didn't spook & run off.

Finally my son got himself together and when the deer turned broadside at 5 - 7 yards and began to walk away he shot.

The buck ran about 100 yards, but wasn't really too hard to find; the bullet had taken out one lung and the liver.

Dad and son were both very excited.

Rifle is a Windham SRC .223 with Bushnell TRS Red Dot.
Bullet was my handload, a Nosler Partition 60 gr. at just over 2,800 fps.

Great story! I love it when hard work and persistence pays off! I laughed picturing his reaction...my son has done it...I've done it...the closer they get the funnier it is.

Great job to you dad for being there for your kid week after week and keeping at it until he succeeds. I'm giving you a big "thumbs up".

Congrats on the deer, but I notice an epic fail as far as safety goes...the gun is pointing RIGHT at him, mag inserted, action closed. Doesn't this disturb anyone else?

*nevermind, now that the picture has been replaced with another, this post makes little sense*

Yes it does me, I'm a safety freak when it comes to firearms. You can never be too sure. I keep my AR bolts locked to the rear whenever I'm not behind the trigger or if it's in the safe.

Congrats to your son, last year I took my first deer which happened to be a buck, was in the woods 45 minutes, I had hunted years and years before without getting a shot, this year I took another buck from my same stand about 30 minutes in on opening day again, this is the one I got this year ImageUploadedByTapatalk1356957888.844169.jpg

I immediately noticed that  when I looked at the pic later, so no you are not the only one.

I thought about setting him behind the deer in our back yard and taking another picture with the rifle repositioned, but decided the "in the field" pic was best.

I had unloaded the chamber of the rifle when the deer was located and confirmed dead, then the magazine was reinserted.

Congrats!!!

Congrats on sticking with it and him bagging his first deer. My son popped one last year @ age 9 and it was an incredible father/son moment. We haven't gotten one this year, but still hope to, as I tell my on, "That is why it is called hunting, not killing, you don't always get a shot."

Thanks for the pic.

Congratulations! I got my first deer when I was nine as well, many years ago. I am excited about taking my boy when he is old enough.
