Executives with a Boise-based company are poised to begin marketing a new type of ammunition specifically for law enforcement teams and designed to avoid causing serious or fatal injuries to their targets and bystanders.
The technology was created at Integrity Ballistics LLC, a company that has spent more than 10 developing and testing a round that resembles a shotgun shell. The round fires a synthetic ball that flattens upon impact and is intended to stun or subdue the target and the plan is to make it available only to law enforcement.

The idea for the product emerged in the months after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks when Integrity founder Joe Kolnik started brainstorming about ways to help federal air marshals assigned to protect planes. The goal was to develop a type of ammunition that would not cause fatal injuries to innocent bystanders or pierce the skin of a plane, yet be powerful enough to stop a potential hijacker.

OK, this sounds like a good idea and can have some good specific uses.
However, its would seem to me that anything fired from a 12ga would pierce the skin of a airplane. After all, it is only sheetmetal with some insulation and interior cosmetic panels.
 
sooo.....they are marketing less lethal ammo?

the same less lethal ammo thats been on the market for the past 40 years or so....

that being said...if Achmed is going to blow up a plane, i want air marshals to use a round that will be the most effective at stopping him....not something that will 'stun' him.

honestly, a few bullet holes in a planes exterior is not going to harm the plane in any significant way.
 
Sounds pretty similar to the various bean-bag or rubber bullet rounds that have been available for quite some time.

That is what I got out of the article as well.

Has anyone noticed they showed a picture of a 50 round pack of handgun bullets then went on to talk a bout a 12 GA round?

Not only that, but they are too long to be 9mm or 40. Look like 38 super to me.
 
So there is a round that is less lethal, will not harm bystanders, and it is provided ONLY to law enforcement? How does that make any sense.

Not that I think this ammo is worth anything, I just don't understand the concept of marketing it only to LEO.
 
Mythbusters tested it, and in order to get explosive decompression in a plane you need an explosive to blast a hole in the wall. A handgun (what most air marshals would have anyway) wouldn't be a significant threat.

The description sounds like a less lethal round. I think the reason it's marketed as LEO only is because the the company figures a BG will be too scared to use real bullets on a plane, so they want to limit the BG ability to use this on a plane. Not saying I agree, but its one possibility.
 
When I have to resort to deadly force to defend my life, I want something that has more of a chance to stop the threat than something "less lethal".

When LE use "less lethal" munitions they're always backed-up by officers who are prepared to immediately use deadly force in the event the less lethal option fails and the bad guy attacks.
