Well, they feel the need to hire armed guards now.......Hypocrites....

Guns are good for the goose but NOT for the gander.

A Clarkstown police report issued on December 28, 2012, confirmed that The Journal News has hired armed security guards from New City-based RGA Investigations and that they are manning the newspaper’s Rockland County headquarters at 1 Crosfield Ave., West Nyack, through at least tomorrow, Wednesday, January 2, 2013.

According to police reports on public record, Journal News Rockland Editor Caryn A. McBride was alarmed by the volume of “negative correspondence,” namely an avalanche of phone calls and emails to the Journal News office, following the newspaper’s publishing of a map of all pistol permit holders in Rockland and Westchester.

Due to apparent safety concerns, the newspaper then decided to hire RGA Investigations to provide armed personnel to man the location.

Private investigator Richard Ayoob is the administrator of RGA. He told the Clarkstown Police on Friday, December 28 that there had been no problems on site at the Journal News headquarters despite the massive influx of phone calls and emails.

McBride had filed at least two reports with the Clarkstown Police Department due to perceived threats. However, the police did not find the communications in question actually threatening. Incident-Report 2012-00033099 describes McBride telling police she was worried because an email writer wondered “what McBride would get in her mail now.”

Police said the email “did not constitute an offense” and did not contain an actual threat.

The Journal News caused an international stir when they released an interactive map of pistol permit holders names and addresses in Rockland and Westchester counties last Sunday, December 23. The editors have said they believe knowing where guns are is in the public’s interest. The newspaper has also taken a strident editorial position in favor of strict gun control.

Rather than take the map down following the public uproar, the executive board at the Journal News has decided to “stick to their guns” and double-down on their original decision, as they have said a map listing all pistol permit holders in Putnam County will soon to be posted.

This makes me think of the joke of why Santa is always smilling and jolly(Because he knows where all the naughty girls live). Now all the anti s should be worried that bad guys know where not to go and the bad guys have a better idea of where they should go looking. Look out anti s here they come. Wishing the best for the New Year.

P.S. "Richard Ayoob"? Any relation to the famous Massad?

Sounds like the 2007 Roanoke Times "sunshine" incident all over again. In that case the "journalist" Christian Trejebal insisted that he'd done nothing wrong and couldn't see any harm....until folks started posting HIS personal info and then suddenly he was very paranoid, calling the police, suspicious of packages delivered to his house, etc.

Paranoia, thy name is "Gun Control"

(http://rgainvestigations.com/index.php/about-us Related to Massad? I dunno. Same last name? When I have run "Brown" and "Carl Brown" through the Memphis Commercial Appeal handgun permit database gateway, I got a lot of hits on "Brown" that I suspect are not related to me and ten "Carl Brown"s who ain't me.)

I recall an article where a woman who had gotten a protective order and moved and got a pistol permit in response to a credible death threat found to her horror that anyone could type in her name at the newspaper database website and get (a) the fact she had a pistol permit and (b) her new, relocated address.

Tennessee "gun nuts" pressured the Memphis Commercial Appeal into removing street address.

People have in the past have responded to me that the permit database is a public record and it is legal to publish public records on people. Name address DOB SSN DL number are public records but they also constitute an identity theft kit. Geez. That starts me on a rant that there is legal, illegal, right and wrong and those are often four different things in my not so humble opinion.

BUT the newspapers who think they are doing a public service by outting gun permit holders are deluded, and the fact that the New York newspaper has hired armed guards out of fear of enraged gun permit holders shows they are probably paranoid. Knowing the carry permit holders I know, they would probably have been better off hiring lawyers, not armed guards, to defend them.

... Any private citizen who carries a loaded, concealed handgun in and among the public constitutes a potential threat to public safety. .... If we know who these people are who carry concealed weapons, we can give them wide berth and/or keep their actions under close scrutiny. ...

I have used that database myself: when the newspaper reports a crime or reckless incident with a gun, I run the accused's name: no hits on bad or dangerous guys so far. Wow, who wudda thunk that, that bad guys with guns don't need no stinkin' permits. But anti-gun nuts like Greg want to know who to give a wide berth to and who to keep under close scrutiny; he would not be able to give a wide birth to triple murderer Michael Fields: Fields used knife and baseball bat and did not need a carry permit for those weapons and would not show up on a newspaper database. I am perfectly comfortable with the idea that the Gregs of the world want to shun me, but the keeping under close scrutiny part creeps me out.

I just thought it a bit ironic that an anti-gun newspaper would decide to get its own hired guns rather than rely on the police protection that they feel is adequate for everyone else. Apparently, the Rockland County Times had similar thoughts.

Oh, it's more than a bit ironic :)

It gets to the root of the hyprocrisy among people. Nobody wants to discuss this amongst the public. It's exactly what Wayne was getting at in his statement, and the Journal News just exemplified it.

Schools apparently aren't good enough to guard, but a newspaper office is? Oh, those precious reporters! At least they'll be safe to report on the next tragedy when the senseless bans don't do anything to solve our problems.

The email that I guess was supposed to be threatening was so laughable, too. Someone just says "good luck with your inbox" and it's a threat? Talk about living in fear...

Never underestimate the ability of the public to go totally nuts and feel able to send whatever they like via email or the internet. I can't imagine what some people have said/sent to those reporters.

Frankly, I can't either. And thanks to Robert for merging the two threads. Moderators around here work overtime trying to take care of the newbies on the site.

The Journal News Hires Armed Guards

In an ironic twist of fate the paper that published the names and adresses of hangun permit holders in two NY counties has hired armed guards to protect its offices after receiving troubling emails in response to publishing the list. I find it most amusing that the media thinks putting armed guards in schools after twenty children are murdered is insanity but putting armed guards in their offices after receiving a few nasty emails makes perfect sense. I guess more guns is the answer when its your ass on the line. Here is a ling to one article. There are many others online.

Do the guards have assault pistols with high capacity magazines?

:D

The public has a right to know the same data about this publisher's bosses, like the identification, home addresses and phone numbers of the officers, counsel and shareholders of the company and its parent company. Maybe that will wake up someone accountable?

I think they should have just posted signs forbidding guns inside their building. That should fix the problem. ;)

There is one NY county that has refused to provide the records to the paper. Said it was a public safety issue.

Part of the problem is that this information is readily available on the internet. I obviously don't condone any type of vigilantism but do see the irony in the situation.
