Was out shooting on Saturday on some BLM land that everyone shoots at out here in Arizona and we were approached by Rangers. Never seen them before, outside of their vehicles so I don't know how normal their attire was.
They walked up to us (thankfully I had to make a phone call to help out a friend and neither myself or my friend had a firearm in our hands.
The first one came up to us, donning a tac vest and a sidearm holstered, then two more came up. Two came in a lifted Ram 1500 and the other in a Chevy Tahoe, both with RANGER decals on the sides.
The other two were wearing the same gear and seemed really friendly at first, I had left my truck door open on the passenger side from getting some drinks out of the cab and they decided to look through it (plain sight laws I'm assuming, that was my mess up) and they were looking underneath my truck on all the sides, as well as looking at my guns (didn't touch, just looking).
Asked for my name, first and last, didn't ask for IDs.
Asked what were were shooting at and if the plastic jugs were ours, to which we replied yes and we were going to take them with us, as well as explaining my practice of taking more out of the desert than we brought with us.
The first (presumably the lead officer, as the others didn't say or ask much) officer went back to his vehicle, and the others were just making small-talk (i.e. "who's the best shot?") and we made jokes etc. they then said "Well, have a good time guys" and started to walk off. That's when the other officer came back and asked if I was Mr. (Last name here), I replied yes and he said "Okay, well that's good, we confirmed that this is your truck". Alright, well yeah, they could have asked for ID and registration and that would have solved that lol, but I went along with it.
I was then asked if I had any methamphetamine in my truck or on my person and if they ran their drug dog around my truck if they would find anything. I said no, and that we were law abiding citizens that did not associate with anything of the sort. He stopped me and asked to let him tell us everything before I make a decision. He explained he has the legal power of the BLM which gave him state jurisdiction and power, county Sheriff, and DEA. He said "If you have methamphetamine, do not tell me. If you have marijuana, medical marijuana, heroin, ecstasy, etc. tell me now and it will be a citation and not an arrest". I again told them I don't use drugs nor have them in my vehicle and he thanked me, we talked a bit about me preparing joining the USMC (he said he was a former 0311) and told me to stop smoking, then proceeded to get their truck stuck in a hole right near my shooting area and bent their bumper.
Apparently they were doing this to everyone in the area, including a guy farther up who was shooting his AK when they came up, asked him to drop the mag and leave it on the ground and when they left, accidentally ran it over, smashing it.
Anyone ever experience stuff like this before? I've been shooting for years and never once have I ever been confronted by law enforcement.
