Would you migrate to another state?

It seems that our ongoing conversation revolves not only the potential rape and pillage our federal constitution, but the advantages in gun ownership of some individual states. Some states like Texas and Arizona are proudly vocal about it, and frankly warmer weather sounds pretty good, even if I might need to learn spanish to get along.

Many of my friends say they are willing to fight from their doorstep to defend their rights, which sounds mighty romantic and feels satisfying in the imagination, but the reality of your family's comfort should be weighed. I might consider relocating to a friendlier state, but in this economy that could mean losing money on the house, risking job security and personal welfare, and also dealing with all the other transplants doing the same thing as you, just to be nearer to like-minded philosophy. People leave their state for a variety of reasons usually connected to something their local government screwed up, to avoid higher taxes, etc. People have had to migrate because of war.

Would you move for your beliefs or stay and do the "cold dead fingers" routine? Are we at war yet?
 
Assuming we're talking about NY and their nonsense "law" ...

I wouldn't drop everything and move right now.
I would start making calm plans and job hunting.
I would move prohibited items into LTS and/or ship them elsewhere, or possibly profiteer on some of them to fund the moving expenses.
 
Easy to have this discussion now, but what happens when the Feds decide that having people freely move from state to state interferes with their ability to keep track of our comings and goings?
 
Uh...wow. We're leaping a bit there, I think. Let's keep it in the realm of the real for today.
 
Absolutely! I work in healthcare and could find work in any state and some countries. My wife has a well paying job with Big Yellow so we're kinda anchored in Illinois right now. I've asked her to be open for transfers to other states. We nearly went to Little Rock, Arkansas a year or two ago. If the same opportunity came up now I'd be pushing pretty hard for the move. Ultimately it's her career and her decision though. She's sick of Illinois for other reasons so I stand a good chance of fleeing Obamaland.

I would migrate to another state rather than 1) be left defenseless or 2) be singled out and made a target by newspapers.
 
I used to be thankful for being born an American, but the past few years I have become more grateful for being a Texan.
 
I'm in the process of it. I've worked hard my entire life to improve the political situation in NYS and this is what you end up with.

If all else fails I will relocate to Pennsylvania and commute. I despise what NYS has become. Court challenge or not, it's time to move on and never look back.
 
Sam, you really think it's that big a leap? As it is now, moving from state to state requires a person to explore, understand, and comply with a raft of firearms regulations, and the Feds are moving to nationalize many firearms laws (registration, for one.) What better way to keep track of your guns than to simply require you to apply for a permit to move your guns to another state, thereby retaining the ability to say, no, you can't?
 
Yeah, for now that's a pretty big leap.

And I don't buy that the feds are "moving to" nationalize many firearm laws. A few wing nuts have proposed such things like registration but there's not even a bill yet, and that seems pretty (highly) unlikely to be in it when it does plop onto the table.

I like wild-eyed fear as much as the next guy, but we're a long way from anything like being told we cannot migrate freely.
 
i already did, 8 years ago, when columbus ohio started an assault weapons ban.
 
I already live in a free state.

This is going to make me sound like a total jerk but, don't come here. People move here from out of state and want to "help" us. We are fine, fix your own state.
 
Now that's more of a stretch than anything else. There are states that we all can agree are very pro-2A. I don’t see that changing soon.

And I see migrating to another state as a very viable option. People are leaving Illinois in droves for reasons well beyond gun rights. Once I can afford it, we're outta here.
 
Yes. States are not as restricted in passing laws as the Federal Government is, for a reason. That reason is, there are other states that you may choose to reside in, that may represent your values and way of life better.

These new NY laws may be unconstitutional under the 14th Amendment, but the 14th Amendment didn't always exist, and didn't apply to the 2nd Amendment in practice, until very recently.

You have a right not to be oppressed by the state government. You have a right to leave. Make your plans, find a new job, find a new home, find a better quality of life than this state offers you.

Things are looking very grim here in the peoples republik of Maryland. Our governor has national ambitions and is looking to one up Cuomo when it comes to violating the 2nd Amendment. If most of this passes, and it looks like it will, I will be putting the house up for sale and moving someplace that at least has a competitive democracy - Pennsylvania or Virginia. So in other words, I will retreat while there are still reasonable safe places to do so.
 
At the rate people are fleeing there liberal States and populating Texas, I may have to some day. They already force me to wear my seat belt and did force us to wear helmets on motorcycles, not that I didn't before but thoes are stepping stone laws to take away all of your rights, that some people with Lib tendencys call "reasonable".
 
The "Great Sort," where people divide themselves on the basis of general ideology, has been going on for some years now. Guns are only a part of it. The country is becoming increasingly polarized geographically. This is not a good omen. The closest parallel I can think of is the regional split in the runup to the Civil War.
 
Would I? Yes. And have. Buying a firearm in NY was insane before all this nonsense kicked up. I was filling out a 4473 for a 12ga and the clerks were so picky about it. They couldn't read the address I put down, so I had to fill out another one. They didn't allow any crossouts such as oh you wrote your address not so neat I am going to cross it out to rewrite it. Nope. New 4473 for that. Clerk got the serial number wrong (by 1 number) when putting it on the form. New 4473. In all I went through about 4 or 5 forms to buy one firearm. The clerk merely said the state really harps on them to get it right and perfect. Which seemed fishy to me to say the least.

On the other hand filling out 4473s in other states, crossouts and scribbles all over with never any problem to redo it.
