Shell Plates

Well I was about to pull the trigger on a Hornaday LNL and read that it came without shell plates...well ok. I went to add them to my cart and there were none. I kept the window open and went to every site I could think of and nothing. What the heck is going on? Is that a part that breaks all the time or what? Any idea on when I could find one for my favorite calibers? It took me a couple years to finally get a progressive and now.........
 
You need a shell plate (very often a different one) for each caliber so obviously, Hornady would not supply all plates with each LnL AP. No, they don't break often. It's just right now all the guns are being scooped up thanks to BHO. In turn, all ammo is being scooped up and folks are now resorting to hoarding up reloading supplies and tools so there is a run on everything related to guns.

Bad time to take up reloading but if you are serious about it, just sit tight. Everything you need will come back and be available.
 
Yep, it looks that way. Oh well I can stick with the Rock Chucker. Hornaday even said it may be months before they are back on the shelves in the numbers to satisfy everyone. Sheeple. Shame.
 
Yup, all manufacturers are probably overloaded right now. When they were offering their 500 free bullets with the LnL AP, I think I had to wait about 4 months for my bullets to arrive. I just waited, they came, I was happy.

Right now I am gathering equipment to cast bullets and develop loads for a new caliber. I can't find much now, but I'm just picking up parts here and there when they become available. In the mean time, I'm glad I have other things to shoot.

Shell plates are to progressives that shell holders are to single stage presses.

Unlike shell holders that are pretty much universal fit between manufacturers, the shell plates are specific to the progressive press. So, the only source for them is from the manufacturer of the progressive press.

Even before the recent panic buying, Hornady L-N-L shell plates could be difficult to find. Hope you find what you are looking for.
 
So you have LNL....how do you like it? I have watched you tube in it's operations and read reviews but know of no one who actutally has one. Big blue rules around here.
 
I like my Hornady L-N-L mostly for the flexibility of easily swapping dies around to different positions. I operate the Hornady a number of different ways depending on what I am doing at the time.

It is no better, or worse, than a Dillon. I could operate a Dillon 650 the same way but not as conveniently and at a higher capital expense.

I also have two Dillon SDBs. My main complaint with them is I have to use both hands to feed it, case feed with my right hand and bullet feed with my left, while the Hornady only requires one, both case and bullet feeding with my left.

My SDBs are dedicated for one cartridge each and never get changed. They do their job fine and I have no intentions of moving the cartridges back to the Hornady.

I do not need, or want, the noise and complexity of case and bullet feeders.

Hey Chuck,

For some reason, I thought you were one of the case feeder guys. I thought I was the only one who disliked the many bothers of case and bullet feeders. Thanks to you, I don't feel so lonesome now.

But I have not gone as far as Walkalong by cutting off the case feeding appendage on the shell plate carrier--yet!:)

I have removed the primer systems from all three of my progressive though.
 
I bought my LnL several months ago. After pricing everything out at several on-line dealers I found there was very little difference in the total delivered price. However, Natchez was the only one that had everything I needed in stock.
