Do I need to export a weapon through a FFL dealer?

The manufacturer is in the USA, correct?

If so, then you don't need an FFL. You'll need to contact the manufacturer (or GunSmith) before shipping to get their instructions.

If it's a handgun, you can NOT use USPS.

Only the person doing the receiving needs to have an FFL. (some states may vary)

If you're talking about sending it back for warranty work, you don't need to send it through an FFL. If it's a handgun, you'll need to send it via UPS Air or FedEx Air, but an FFL can send it USPS and save quite a bit. If you bought it from an individual without an FFL and want to return it, you'll have to send it to an FFL on his end. (If you do UPS or FedEx, you don't have to do Express, but can do 2nd day air and save a bunch.)

It sounds like you bought it from a company which I assume has an FFL. If they agree it's defective, have them set up the shipping back to them.

Just to clarify, import generally refers to receiving an item from a foreign country and export means send to a former country.

You may directly ship it to the manufacturer, no FFL needed. They can also ship it back to you, no FFL needed.

An FFL will save you money, though. They'll usually charge ~$25 to ship it, where UPS us double or triple that.

I think you'll need to talk to S&W to see what they're going to charge you...I seriously doubt they'll try to charge you anything that's questionable. They're a reputable manufacturer.

Whats wrong with it???? Age has little to do with the equation, a well taken care of firearm should outlast you... (With exception of replacement parts availability.)
