I have a shadow box with a real neat old winchester model37. The issue is the gun is only 6inch barrel. I love displaying this piece for several reasons. Has alot of patina. Second...has a great bootlegging story behind it. Third its a great piece of firearms history.
Now with all this being said. Is it illegal for me to have this even though its in a display shadow box. Its apparent that the gun wont be used. The barrel is even pitted. Is it as simple a taking the firing pin oout? I live in ky if it matters on laws.
i love this gun because of its small size. Easy to display. And rich history. I hope someone can enlighten me on this matter.

I'm not sure on the specifics but you would have to do more than take out the firing pin, and they are not going to care if the barrel is pitted. Sounds like an awesome piece though.

So let me get this straight. The question you posted on a publicly available internet forum is: Is possession of an unregistered Short-Barreled Shotgun illegal?

Perhaps you should delete your post, hide your dog and contact a firearms attorney?

not looking for BS. just answers. if the best thing for me to do is donate to muesum then i will do so. but i wont allow this piece be distroyed

I gave you the best, logical, common sense answer possible. Contact a firearms attorney and delete your post.

OThe answer is if its a non-registered NFA item, which it sounds like it is, the pitting, lack of firing pin, shadow box, or "not firing it" aren't going to make a bit of difference.

You've got a serious situation here and should take it seriously.

I'd say you could go ahead and process an application to make it a legal short barreled shotgun, but you're in a bad position until that's complete. Plus if you send it off right now to be engraved, you're just bringing other people into it.

You got good advice about getting a lawyer. Take the advice.

Okay.

Bottom line is that your "wall hanging" is a ticket to up to 10 years in a federal prison, a large fine (and a lifetime loss of gun rights). And you've admitted your unlawful possession of same to everyone in the world with Internet access.

You need a lawyer.

And there's really nothing more to discuss in open forum.

Closed.
