Gun control bill shot down in Montpelier

MONTPELIER, Vt. -
A push to ban assault weapons in Vermont is dead. Sen. Phil Baruth, D-Chittenden County, introduced the bill earlier this month. It would have banned assault-style weapons and capped the number of rounds in a magazine to five.

Baruth says he was inspired to write the bill after the Connecticut school shootings. But now he says there is not enough support in the Statehouse or among Vermonters to pass it.

Hooray for the Green Mountain State! Way to go to all of our Vermont members who took action and spoke out on this!

I think that with emotions waning, and some reason thrown into the mix, the entire, national AWB, mag ban, semi-auto ban is done. It is a loser for politicians, and they know it hence the watered down Obama EO's.

Stop panicking people.

If a liberal state like VT doesn't have the support to get a ban passed, it isn't gonna happen on a national level.

Vermont is one of the few Eastern states that has remained vehemently pro gun for over 200 years.
Liberal really does apply to gun laws in that state. There aren't many! :)

As glad as I am to hear this, it's defensive in nature.
When I communicate with my elected officials in NYS, I not only tell them I'm against the SAFE ACT (Cuomo's new gun regs), but I'm in favor of the repeal of the NYS AWB and the Sullivan Act, too.

Don't they have Constitutional Carry in Vermont?

They do... and it's great! What a neat feeling - back in 2010, going from having just done the beg-and-wait routine for a pistol permit (just to own the gun), to borrowing the instructors 1911s and carrying them openly on my hip during breaks. Amazing how I didn't do anything weird, and no one got injured or killed. It's as if permits and gun control are ineffectual smoke and mirrors, or something like that...

Vermont didn't lead the way... they never left the way like other States did. VT is the only State that does not have any gun legislation on the books.

Leahy is their Senator because VT doesn't believe in fixing what isn't broken... He has worked for them for decades.

I will point out that Coolidge was their President... The Vermont way of thinking is pretty unique.

We probably would have done well to back their choice for President back in 2004.

Actually Vermont does have a couple of gun laws.

You can't own a suppressor (silencer) except for LE and GOV.

You can't carry a loaded long gun in a vehicle including ATVs except on your own property.

The hamfisted overrreach by NYC's Governor helped put peoples' priorities back into perspective, too. The Sandy Hook shooting was a tragedy with a massive, visceral public reaction; but the NY-AWB is an ugly -and enduring- stain on the gun-grab movement. Gunnies will be carefully following the process of that law's trial and ultimate repeal for months/years after the anti's have grown weary of the children of Sandy Hook and callously cast them aside.

You can't own a suppressor (silencer) except for LE and GOV.
Why would LE/Gov need suppressors? Aren't they the tool of assassins? Who's the govt. assassinating???

DBR:

I think if you look up those two exceptions you will find that they are not "gun laws" but attached to other laws unrelated to gun control. I stand by my original statement.

Thank goodness! I was concerned that the old homestead was going to heck in a handbasket after I moved to New Hampshire in 2001.. At least there are still some cool-headed, reasonable people still in the green mountain state!

Wow. I am very surprised by my adopted state. Usually when Burlington or Montpelier get struck by the "good idea fairy" the rest of the state gets dragged along for the ride. This is good news indeed.

Good NH news yesterday too. Machine gun sales and registration is off the charts.

What gives you that idea? I am Vermonter through and through and our reality has always been that "flatlanders" move up there from CT and MA, after wrecking their own States, because of how simple and laid back we are and then try and turn us into what they left behind... So far VT has resisted.

Now I live in CT and am trying to fix all the damage they did to their own state.

Not to be argumentative, but how is it that Leahy is their senator?

Leahy is a shooter, and has a range at his home in Middlesex, VT.

He's also a strong proponent of all civil liberties, not just the 2A. He still has progress to make, however. He still favors an AWB. Whether or not that's a strong conviction or a political stance remains undetermined. Regardless, he's a damned sight better than Feinstein and Schumer. As is Bernie Sanders.
