recommend a hand primer

RCBS, I buy 2 shell holders, one for the press and one for the primer gizmo.

I reload .06, .270 and .45acp, same shell holder!

If you have Lee trays, try a 21st century retrofit on the body, can still use the trays and shellholders, the ergonomics are way better, and it really is a nice unit to use.

I have the older and newer Lee models. My preference is the RCBS. I have four so can keep one set up for small and large pistol and rifle. I have been using a Sinclair for my match primers but will be ordering a unit from KM Shooting tomorrow. Somehow those slipped by me.

Hueyville,

Since the large pistol and large rifle are the same size, why have one specifically for each one? Just seems like a waste to me but if it makes you happy then that's cool!

Because it is easier if working more than one project at a time. Big decal on top tells me what is in each so pick up what I need and most have to do is change shell holder. Don't have to worry bout a stray rifle primer in the ram if moving to pistols. Why not?

So you keep them loaded up with primers? I guess that would simplify things for mass reloading. I'm not being critical, just curious.

I dump the primers in, use till done and set back in its holder. Never take primers out to put others in. I actually have two extra labeled trays for each. That way when priming and tray goes empty, I stick another in and hand the empty to wife so she can refill and be part of the fun. She likes making all the little primers flip up correctly. I keep priming she fills trays and coffee cups and all is good. I ask her for the small pistol primer and she just has to read the label to hand me correct machine. Almost impossible to ever forget what was in that tray.

That's pretty cool Huey. I usually use all the primers in the tray so there wouldn't be anything to put back anyway.

follow up

Just primed a batch of 50 45 LC with my new RCBS. The square tray model with the universal shell holder. the feeding of the primers was perfect. I like the gate for closing off the primer feed for storage. The cover for the tray is a bit of a pain to remove. The universal shell holder takes some getting use to. To bad they don't make the square tray model that uses regular shell holders. So far overall I like it better than the LEE. One more thing worth mentioning is the LEE tray works way better than the RCBS for flipping or wright siding the primers.

I have used a lot of hand primers from all different makers and the best one I have found is the new Lee Ergo Prime.
I just got a RCBS see my follow up post.
just wondering about the egro prime does it use the same tray and feed design as the XR. Is there a loose or un captured primer between the two lift pins.

aladdin,
What did they replace it with, another XR that just don't work? The cover on my XR has broke. For now I slip a heavy rubber band over it to use it.

The first model XR that I had did not have the little tower on the cover or the metal tab between the lift pins that the new design has. It worked very well. I have trouble with The new model feeding the primers I would get doubles and some turned over and some on edge.
