Among other things, it subtly makes the case that politicians are unwilling to tackle the difficult social reasons for violence (including firearm violence), opting instead to simply demonize the inanimate objects that, in fact, may be the BEST deterrent to violence.

My thoughts exactly. I also enjoy finding articles like this outside the normal circles we usually find to be gun friendly. While I don't read Forbes regularly, this sort of surprised me when it popped up.
 
could have been a little more focused, it seemed to ramble around. starting off talking crime demographics and ending on 2nd protecting against tyranny isn't a straightforward path.

Were still a couple good points in there though.
Perhaps the optimum situation is to be the only household without a gun in a neighborhood where most homeowners are suspected to have one.

I agree it could have been more focused and had more citations for all the claims it makes. Not that I disagree with them, but any anti that sees an article that says 2.5 million defensive uses of guns without a citation to a study, will just shrug it off as a lie.

Then again, even if you do cite a study, they'll just say the study is flawed/biased. But it is still better than nothing.
 
It also gives an interesting insight on how DC has lowered it's crime rate and it has NOTHING to do with gun control.

Why is that surprising? Crime is ALWAYS highest in the poorest, welfare zones. get rid of the ne'er-do-wells, and voila! Crime goes down

Not sure I feigned any surprise. But read it as you will. As you can see, I'm from Washington State, not Washington D.C. so I'm not intimately familiar with the changes going on there. But in general, yes - ne'er-do-wells down, crime down.
 
I like the point that if you want the safety a gun provides without the chance of injury due to accidental discharge, you should be the only non-gun-owner in a neighborhood full of them. The opposite position of most of the anti-gun crowd (none of my neighbors should have guns because they might snap and shoot everyone).

Precisely.

Although this doesn't just apply to men. My wife knows her way around a pump, and a mother's instinct to protect her children is formidable.
 
LOL.. jamesbeat, MY guns are for my wife's and kids' safety first, even if my own safety has to come second. My wife knows this, which is why her gun is likewise for her husband's and kids' safety. She has stood behind my shoulder with a loaded .38 more than once in our marriage, and don't think I don't appreciate it.

My neighbors are safer. If they were in danger, I'd act in their behalf at any time. Every neighbor should do the same for each other, and I believe my neighbors would, too.

Exactly - I think people need to remember if they have neighbors than THEY are a neighbor to somebody else. Even if you don't agree with someone else's ideology it really shouldn't stop you from being a stand up neighbor and help them in a time of need or danger.
