Hoping some who are FFLs might weigh in:

I purchased a gun via GunBroker. Paid, etc.. I contacted my local FFL and they said they would send the FFL to the seller. I know they're busy these days (or so I'm told :) )

I know there is something about how they have 24 hours to enter their receipt of the firearm into their log within 24 hours. But, is there anything covering how long they have to send their FFL to the seller/shipper? Or how long is a reasonable amount of time to give them to send the FFL info to the seller? Or, to put it another way, how long should I give them before I ping them again?

Thanks as always for the input.

get a file ffl copy--have it signed for the particular transaction and mail it your self with the $$ to the seller's ffl holder--always worked for me.

good luck.

Well, I gave them everything they asked for (the said they would email it).

Kimbershoot: That makes sense but I'm not sure how/where to find a file copy of their particular FFL.

My FFL said they will email it to the seller. My question is just (1) is there a mandated amount of time they have to do so? and, if not, (2) how long is reasonable/respectable for them to do it? Before I "remind" them so as to not invite negative feedback (and so I can get my new-to-me gun)?

1) im not sure there is a legally mandated amount of time they have to send it in, they dont have to send it at all if they dont want to...

2) a 'reasonable' amount of time?....ide call back in 3-4 days if they havent sent it in that time.

See if you can find an FFL with whom you can establish a good relationship for future orders. My FFL gave me a signed copy of his FFL that I can send to anyone, and even sent me a scanned copy to save on my computer so I can email it directly to any seller. I always tell him immediately after I buy something and advise that I'm sending the scanned copy so he knows what's happening all the time. The original signed copy is to keep in case I find something that I need to buy right now and have sent to him. :D

My FFL Guy......

sends a copy by FAX. Almost always the same day.

They also charge 10.00 for a transfer to ANYONE. They really support our
2nd Ammendment Rights. They are absolutely reliable.

If you're in the DFW area call Lewisville Pawn Shop. I don't think you'll be disappointed

Is the seller a licensee? If not, no copy of the license will go out, you get the numbers to run using ATF's FFL EzCheck.

If the seller is an FFL, does he accept an emailed copy of the license? Some want only faxes, and I've encountered two that didn't even want that, they wanted a mailed, wet-ink copy of my license.

This.

I just shoot him an email of what I have incoming from whatever state and I dont have to bother him its a win win for both of us.

You don't "find" one, the FFL (if he is stupid enough) gives you one.

There is no "rule" as to how long they have ... I tend to send mine within minutes of being given the "where to" information. I'd give them a day, then bug them again. As long as it gets there before your payment does it won't slow anything down.

Thanks everyone. I ended up finding an FFL 2 blocks from my house who send his FFL in less than 2 hours and charged me less than my (now former) FFL.

To my knowledge they never did send him the FFL info. IF this guy works out I'll be very happy as I can swing by his place on my runs and tie new purchases to my dogs back for the .5 mile trip back home.

Email works. Most have a scan of their license. The seller should check to make sure the receiving FFL is on the list and probably give them a call.

My LGS gave me a copy marked FILE COPY ONLY. They will accept firearms shipped by a non-FFL. I regularly send/fax/email a copy to sellers. My LGS does a lot of business on line and with auction sites. They complain of often receiving an FFL copy with no reference to which gun has been purchased. They have also encountered some receiving FFL dealers who will not accept email copies, only fax or hard copies. I've never dealt with anyone who demanded a "wet ink" version.

Some dealers are worried that someone would take the copy and change the info on it to obtain firearms w/o an ffl.

You would have to worry about that no matter where you sent a copy though... Im assuming most dont just pass it out like a business card.

Im guessing thats one of the risks in todays modern times that the old timers never had to worry about... (internet sales, etc.)

If the copy is sent directly to another dealer, the assumption is it will be filed and not passed on to anyone else.

two reasons:

1) Ever hear of "Photo Shop"?

2) -I- want to send the FFL copy so -I- know what is coming in, and for whom. Even with that, I still manage to get a "blind" shipment about once a month. No idea who it is for, what it is, or where it came from (beyond the return address ... IF there is one)
