I have a problem: Impulse buying and the Shield 9mm

I go into the LGS with daddy's little girl (my 3 year old angel) and it is packed. It's truck day, and the owner is hooping and hollering when I walk in: guns, AR and hi cap pistol mags, bullets galore. The atmosphere was insane.

I'm elbow to elbow with the girl, and in the corner of my eye, I spy a blue Smith and Wesson box, one that signifies M&P. I shout, "what's that?!?"

Luckily, he brings it over instead of yelling back...it was a Shield in 9mm...the ccw white whale. The shop phone rings, guy asking if they got a Shield in. Owner says they got ONE, I smile..."you just sold it!"

Actually, its on a short layaway, as I was only there looking with enough to put half down. I held it, fondled it, dry fired it (with permission) and loved it immediately.

Owners: did I screw up? These are hard to come by these days, but are they worth the hype? I've not shot one, hence my thread title.

Please chime in with reviews, info, or bantering as to whether or not I did good.:)
 
I heard good things and your lucky u found one. I ended up with a kahr cw9 instead because I can't find a shield anywhere. I love the cw9 but the shield is good from what I hear.

I've heard this as well.

I love the triggers on both, but I couldn't help it.

Have you shot the Shield?
 
I've got the 40 and love it. Carries great and the trigger is almost as good as the glock.
 
Not that it matters at this point, but I'm seeing them go from $550 up to $700+, and folks are actually buying them

Mines $450, NIB with two mags, OTD.:D
 
The M&P Shield is the finest compact concealed carry pistol out there, bar none. That's the main reason that S&W can't satisfy market demand for them.

That's a very decent price, considering.
 
No negatives for me. I had an LC9 for ccw that I never could warm up to. Haven't had that problem with the Shield.

That snatched one up the first time I cast eyes upon it. That was 6 months ago, and I haven't seen any more show up at my LGS since.

I enjoy shooting the little monster, and with about 800 rounds through it, I have not had a problem. The trigger took a bit of adjustment, and I like the longer grip. Haven't found a holster I like, though.

I usually try not to pick up an early specimen. May have gotten away with it this time. No buyer's remorse here. Good gun.

This one got to the shop AFTER I did.

I really dig the trigger, nice for a DAO.

Honestly not sure. For me it felt great in the hand. Not good like my other pistols but absolutely great. Sadly I didn't have the cash at the time I got to fondle one.
 
I think it has the best ergonomics in its class. It's slimmer than your doublestacked compacts. Better trigger than LC9. Accurate. Don't want to sound like a fanboy but I compared it to several CC weapons before buying. I bought it for my wife's Christmas present.
 
I'm not a big M&P semi auto fan...I want to qualify this statement -- I'm sure they are great guns, they just don't do a whole lot for me...who knows, maybe one day they will grow on me. Having said that, there is something intriguing about the shield.

Sounds like you got a great deal on it too! Congrats man.
 
There were 32 in the shop...I got the last one(a .40) when a guy brought 2 a nine and a .40. :what:
 
You'll love it. I have one too, but you might lose the white dot in the front site. Mine came out a couple of weeks ago.
Smith has a problem there. I have a compact and same thing. the would replace the sites no problem but I don't want to be without them that long.

I've shot mine twice now in local club IDPA match and I'm not the only one. I didn't do too bad even with a small gun with less rounds.

Extra mags were hard to find last fall, probably next to impossible now.

Good purchase! I've you don't love it, sell it and should probably get your money back.
 
I agree with @pdosh on the front sight post issue. My dot fell out the first range session. LGS wanted to send it back to S&W. I called S&W and spoke with a tech and he recommended a drop of white nail polish from the end of a toothpick would do the trick. It did.

If there is a negative, I think it is the fact that it has a safety. It is tough to operate and I don't like safeties, so I don't use it. I also don't like the extended magazine much, so I traded mine for the short one with someone who prefers the standard.
 
The Shield is not a DAO. It is striker fired, and it fires from a fully cocked position.

That trigger is light enough. The safety is needed. However, it is unobtrusive. If you don't like it, don't use it.
 
Well, I compared the Kahr CM9 to the Shield and walked out with the former. As the CM9 is the same barrel length but smaller pistol
 
Had the 9mm and got rid of it but I have the .40 hanging on my hip as I type this. It's a great gun very accurate for such a short barrel and very easy to conceal. Enjoy it, others will no doubt be tempting you with more cash than you paid to try and pry it from you. :)
 
Just one Shot, just upgrade from 9 to 40, or was there something wrong with the 9?
 
I have an M&P Shield .40 for my daily carry. I was a little apprehensive getting the .40 in such a small frame, but I'm glad I did. I prefer the .40 cal cartridge to the 9mm, personal preference.

It is surprisingly easy to shoot and get back on target, I haven't tried the 9mm Shield but I'm sure its a great shooter as well.

One thing to watch for all those Shield owners out there, is that the early release of them they had problems with the extended magazine dropping out. Smith & Wesson has a fix for this, I believe it is a more substantial magazine catch than what came stock. I believe this only affected the extended magazine due to the increased magazine spring pressure against the latch. So if you are experiencing this problem, let them know and they will send a shipping request and get it fixed for you.
