Is .380 and .38spl gone too?

I would get handgun in "real caliber" like .40S&W for which ammo is readily available. With .357 and 9x19 the .38 and 9x17 make little sense to get unless one already has one.

I would have thought after BILL 'Monica Missiles' Clinton and Janet 'Babykiller' Reno people here would have put away a modest stock of ammo. Not saying 1000s of rounds but hey, I do have at least a couple hundred rounds for each type of round I use!

Not to long ago Wal-Mart had 400 round machinegun boxes full of 5.56 FMJ 55gr for decent prices. All you had to do was buy ONE.

And surely the more intrepid folks would have learned to reload their own ammo!

The current shortage is as much a testament to the inflexibility of Just In Time theory as it is due to a real increase in demand.

JIT sounds great in MBA school, but I've seen entire factories shut down waiting on a guy with a box of bolts hand carried from Japan.

Just be glad it's only ammo that's in short supply.

There are millions of guns in both of those classic calibers.
Only because you don't find them right now means nothing.
Going by this you would have to worry of 9mm and .45ACP, you can't find them right now either!

Your missing a 4 and the word Magnum if you want to talk about "real calibers"....

We all know "real calibers" come from shortening a cartridge and making it less powerful.

Please translate for this dummy.

I was of the opinion that .357 magnum was still pretty much the standard by which other pistol calibers are compared to for things such as stopping power, versatility and affordability.

.38 special lgs fair supply. 1 box .25acp, 3 boxes .32acp, 1 box .45acp that's all folks.

'Just in Time' works if you have time.

But with a mass run there is no time!

Same goes with food and other essentials.

Keep a modest quantity of all the things you need, even toilet paper, just in case.

You don't need mountains of it, but some backed up.

Picked up a UMC bulk pack 250 rounds of 38 spl this morning at a LGS for $95.

My Walmart had .380, .357, .40, & .45, last time I was there. No 9mm .223 or 12. If you are worried about ammo supplies, buy what's available, then the gun. I just got thousands of rounds of 9mm mak very reasonably ( thank you aimsurplus) and two pistols to shoot it out of (thank you classlicarms). This was all cheaper than two range trips shooting 9mm or 223 at panic prices.

I see a lot of talk about "just in time practices". I can't see how just in time would make as much sense with things like ammo where a caliber can stay in style for 100 years or so.
They way I understand it, "just in time practices" were mainly developed for industries like electronics or computers, where by the time they built up any inventory the electronic components were already obsolete and were nothing but a loss. Ammo doesn't expire or become obsolete quickly, so I don't really see the benefit.

Just came out of Gander (disappointed). Rack upon rack of .357 at $1.25 per round, several racks of .40 and .410 and that.....was......it.
No .22, no .38, .380, or.45 at all.

Plenty of .38 Spl. at my LGS- probably 'cause no one thinks "assault rifle" when they see a box of 148 WCs.

.380 is available in spots, at least moreso than last time we had a panic.

.38 spl is dwindling and .380 isn't far behind...some places they are gone, gone, gone!

the one place I've seen stuff with multiple boxes, Gander Mountain, the prices are high and that is currently a deterrent...unless your personal stash is on fumes and that's what they are hoping will drive you buy at top dollar!

I have been finding the 100 packs of WWB for a 380. The 380 WWB went up from $33 to $37 for 100 rounds. I have been been seeing just plain ole Remington FMJ for $33 for 50 rounds.

I don't own a gun chambered in that round but I havent seen any 380 in any of the various stores I've gone to.
2-3 weeks ago you could still find 38 Special, but mostly round nose target/practice loads. Nothing in a defensive 38 Special at the various local shops.
A few days ago I did notice that one of my favorite local sporting goods stores
got in a good shipment of ammo. From what I could tell, it was mostly target/plinking ammo - and a lot of what they got was American Eagle.

Our LGS's have more .380's than 9mm, .40 and .45 cal. combined! The .380 seems to be an unpopular round in my area. It makes me feel like "hoarding" .380 ammo.

If you have been hoarding some of those calibers, and are tired of falling over ammo cans, now might be a good time to contact your local gun shop and see if they would like to buy some.
