I decided to detail strip my M1911 for the first time, it was complex as heck but not as bad as I thought, came apart easily, not so easy to put back together :banghead: but I made it... I finally feel comfortable ordering those trigger and sear parts, I think I will be able to install them.

Also, I used a metal tubed PDA stylus as a punch and a hardback book to hammer it in... good ol' yankee ingenuity :D

Congratulations.
A word though : don't attempt this with a Walther PPK or a CZ 75 : next to them, the 1911 is a miracle of simplicity.

The 1911 is actually fun to take apart. I've pulled two of mine apart (a Sistema and a Colt CCO) to detail clean and replace all the springs with a Wolff Service kit.

I wish all handguns were as easy to work on.

The 1911 is amazingly simple and intuitive to disassemble and reassemble. I learned over 30 years ago and was able to do it from memory, without referring to printed material or Youtube, more than 20 years later.

Keep in mind that they will likely need to be fitted to function safely

Sure you can install them. However they need to be fit together to work.

There is maybe a .0001% chance they will drop in and function. I learned this the hard way. I have a Hammer sitting in my spare parts bin because when i install it it just locks the trigger up.

Yes more guns should be like the 1911 guns. The only other gun that easy besides my Rossi Rio Grand Rifle (just like the Marlin 336 in take down) is the Beretta 92 or Taurus PT 92. I've pretty much learned how to do all that I own however including the Uberti/Colt clones.

Believe me the Glock is even easier to detail strip...it doesn't even require a screwdriver

You can fully detail strip the 1911 with nothing more than parts from the 1911 you are detail stripping. No tools required.

I think that ceased to be true after they changed the grip screws from the originals shaped for the rim of a cartridge

How about detail stripping a Ruger MKII/III? Not something I'd want to try without tools. But man do you feel like you've accomplished something once it's all back together and it still works!

You do need a screwdriver to get the grips off. But you can still detail strip the gun with those left on.

If you have standard flat head screws the leaf spring can be used as a screwdriver to remove the grips:D

but always heard most guys say the Glock is easier to field strip while the 1911 is easier to detail strip.
This is interesting, because one of the reasons I started looking at other guns (SIG, Beretta, etc.) is because I didn't like how the field strip procedure of the 1911.

While it is interesting that the Glock can be field stripped with one hand, I still find it easier to do with a M&P or XD.

Detail stripping a Glock is easier as there are only a couple of pins to push out before all the parts are free to be removed from the frame. You just have to press down a couple of spring loaded pieces to detail strip the slide
