Has anyone bought steel from admiral steel? They sell hr1095 and cra 1095. Can anyone tell me the difference between the two? Do they come annealed or would I have to anneal them?

Seems like they have a great selection of types of metal and sizes. Their prices are reasonable too.

Thanks.

It's a crapshoot with them whether you get straight pieces or not, after getting a bent piece I stayed away. They are not well thought of in the knife forums and if there's another source I'd use it.

Agree with Valkman, almost every piece of 1095 I got from Admirral had a "bow" or curve to it.

I too would suggest New Jersey Steel Baron.

I bought from them too and was happy, even though I was told not too by knifemakers who had "been there done that". Finally I did get bent steel and what was I supposed to do with that? After that I only bought from sellers with a good reputation in the knifemaking world and never had another problem.

5160 is normally sold in 1/4" thickness which is why it is usually not bent , from what I have heard it is due to the way they cut or shear their 1095 that causes the bend.
