My dog's tenth hog

Went hunting at a WMA yesterday with my dog and shotgun. We were quail hunting but 2 hikers told me there were 4 hogs up ahead. We went up there and jumped them and I hit one with buckshot. My dog bayed it up until it collapsed.
It was the 10th hog she has bayed up.
As I was dragging the 90 lb. gilt out, she jumped another but the Tri-tronics 'persuader' stopped her.

Dropped the hog off at the processor to have spicy Italian sausage made. I'm drooling as I type this.

What does it mean when a dog "bays up" an animal?

It means the dog pursued the animal, caught up with it, and keeps it in that spot through the use of voice, threats of force, and actual force. Dogs will "bay" as a way to let the hunter know where to go. Get on youtube and search for "hog hunting with dogs".

The first time she did it, I just knew she was going to be killed but discovered that the hogs won't run very far from a small dog. They turn and face the dog and don't seem to notice when I come huffing and puffing with the gun. It makes the whole experience a lot easier.

Your dog's mama "didn't raise no fool!" She knew what to do and how to avoid getting cut up. It still happens on occasion though.

What kind of dog is that?
 
Boykins are about the ultimate hunting dog. Deer, hogs, coons and, of course, birds. I worked with a one year old female this duck season and she was danged good. Picked up 18 of 21 we got one morning. Don't know how good they would be on geese with the small size but I bet they would try.
 
Just out of curiosity, which WMA if you don't mind sharing? I am just surprised a bit that hogs were out during the day in an area with foot traffic. They eluded me in WMAs when i lived down that way.

Baird. I hardly ever see one one while walking unless my dog smells it first but this time was an exception. It was the only hog killed that day.
 
Good for you! I can't count how many times I could hear them moving through Green Swamp but couldn't get to them because of the saw grass or brush or whatever. Seems they were always bedded down during the day and wouldn't come out of the thick stuff until well past sunset.

I saw guys get lucky driving them out of sawgrass patches, but I mostly hunted by myself. I used to see them on the side of the road driving to Avon Park and in farmer's fields, but again never got a shot at one. They sure outsmarted me.
 
Yup iirc hounds make a very particular baying sound when they're on the scent?

Sounds like a nice adventure and you told of it well! I bet that Italian Sausage is gonna be good! :)

What type of shotgun were you hunting with and what gauge?
 
I had a Remington 870 in 12 gauge. 00 buckshot for the hog, 7 1/2 for the quail. I like a pump shotgun during small-game season because you can change out ammo types easier and quieter than with an autoloader. I'm an opportunistic hunter ... quail, squirrels, hogs, snipe .. whatever my dog flushes or chases so I carry a few buckshot and a slug or 2 when hunting.
 
Sounds good. I've got a couple of 870's and they are versatile. Walking around with a SxS double loaded with small shot and a couple of easy to get buckshot in a pocket ain't bad either!

No, but it's legal to carry slugs here while duck hunting and a friend of mine mistakenly loaded a slug while wood ducks were dropping through the trees to flooded hardwoods. He shot a hen woodie and blew a half-dollar-sized hole through her.
