From the Chicago Tribune, Cook County has passed a new gun law making it a crime to fail to report lost or stolen guns. This law does not apply to the City of Chicago, just the suburbs, but Chicago is pushing to pass the same type of law. Gun grabbers in Illinois have been trying to get this type of law passed on a statewide basis for years.

I fail to see any point to this new law . If there is a point please explain it to me.

Well the way I see it is that now when you say you don't have that old firearm anymore because it was lost or stolen they can press charges and fine you

Agreed, looks like they found our loop hole of "boating accident". anyone who posts "boating accident" as an excuse is an idiot!!!. Let's welcome UBC's as we are certain to fall to these "gov take care of me" people. Stop being a dumbass and please stand up for your rights. They are after all your rights, and our founding fathers Proclaimed have a backbone and fight. If you fight best with a pen, please do it. If you'd fight best with a sword, just you wait.

Get smarter folks, if you hide it and don't register your guns (ubc's) good for you but that will be one of thousands, not one of millions enforcing the ban or pick up of firearms. By then it will be too late.

I am so sorry for all of the IL residents, I hate to see you or fellas in this light but it happened. Is your shootin buddy a NRA member? Are you? Do you write your congress critters? Do your shooting friends? Family?

IL is a great example of what could happen if we just sit by the way side.

So no more boating accidents. Is it still permissible for the gun to fall apart due to shoddy manufacturing?

"My rifle/sidearm/shotgun" (pick one, or all three) was run over by my vehicle by mistake as I was preparing to go shooting/hunting/gunsmith (pick one) as I was in a hurry and pressed for time. As a result, it was damaged beyond repair, so I elected to use my cutting torch to destroy it by cutting it up into small pieces. This seemed much easier and faster than the legal transfer process, and now that it was no longer a firearm, I threw the pieces in the trash".

That's all well and good, but if the gun you claim was destroyed happens to turn up later at a crime scene, you are going to jail.

If we did sit by and not act, this kind of crap would be throughout the state. Please don't confuse what happens in Chicago with what the rest of the state thinks, supports, or writes their representatives about.
If you notice, it says they want to get this for the whole state, like they want an AWB for the state, but so far, we have been fighting it off. We have a huge disease in Illinois, and it is called Chicago. We are doing what we can to fight it, but the disease is big and tough and does spread.
I can only speak for me, but I am an NRA member, so are all of my family members, because I bought them their initial membership. I write my reps weekly and sometimes more. It never stops in this state.

And you are a active gun owner, most folks think a boating accident, or crappy gun falling apart fixes this crud and it simply does not.

Fast forward 20years, a thug breaks into your house to abduct your child and you shoot them........ With the gun you "lost" what now?....

The boating accident, lost, stolen, or sold will not be a excuse when the ubc's are in order. And if it passes and I have to weigh in on such an event, I will pull for full prosicution as I uphold the law.

"And if it passes and I have to weigh in on such an event, I will pull for full prosecution as I uphold the law"
At least I know what side I am on in that regard.
There needs to be mass non-compliance with most gun laws, not just by a few of us patriots. However, I suppose that some here will uphold any law that gets passed, just as the early tax collectors did for the crown 200+ years ago. As has been said recently, these are interesting times we live in. Lately I have established friendships with some folks I might never have known, and at the same time have severed all ties with some long time associates, all over the issue of civil rights, namely firearms related.

I would imagine its so that they can throw the owner of a firearm used in a crime, into prison, if it happens that his/her gun was stolen, unreported as such, then used in a crime.

How would city officials know that you had a gun in the first place? Are guns registered in Illinois? Is this an attempt at beginning registration?

Mac
I believe that all owners are required to possess a FOID card, which would be for all intents & purposes the same thing.

Might make sense if they ever actually pursued the gun charges they currently have on the books. But they never do.

I've sat in the courtroom at 26th and California and watched as Anita Alvarez's crew of prosecutors dropped all the gun related charges for gang bangers as part of the plea agreement. They wind up using these laws and gun charges as bargaining chips in most cases.

My BIL, the Chicago senior cop, says he can't recall any serious prosecution on gun charges in over 20 years of court dates.

It's going to be interesting when we get CCW later this summer to see what Cook County tries to do to ban it anyway.

Well in Illinois you have to have FOID before you can own any gun, but it does nothing as registration as anyone can apply whether you plan on owning a gun or not. However Chicago does make it's prisoners (or citizens) register handguns with the police(not rifles). So Chicago does know what law-abiding citizens have hand guns, however as you can assume in particular neighborhoods this has no compliance.

In other words what Cook County passed is "feel-good" legislation. It does nothing to actually reduce crime and punishes those who follow the laws in the first place.

I live in Cook County and have no plans whatsoever to report to the sheriff when I sell a gun. It's a private transaction and I don't need no meddling hands in my personal business.
